Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation has been to examine the mass and momentum exchange between the atmosphere, oceans, solid Earth, hydrosphere, and cryosphere. The investigation has focused on changes in the Earth's gravity field, its rotation rate, atmospheric and oceanic circulation, global sea level change, ice sheet change, and global ground water circulation observed by contemporary sensors and models. The primary component of the mass exchange is water. The geodetic observables provided by these satellite sensors are used to study the transport of water mass in the hydrological cycle from one component of the Earth to another, and they are also used to evaluate the accuracy of models. As such, the investigation is concerned with the overall global water cycle. This report provides a description of scientific, educational and programmatic activities conducted during the period July 1, 1999 through June 30,2000. Research has continued into measurements of time-varying gravity and its relationship to Earth rotation. Variability of angular momentum and the related excitation of polar motion and Earth rotation have been examined for the atmosphere and oceans at time-scales of weeks to several years. To assess the performance of hydrologic models, we have compared geodetic signals derived from them with those observed by satellites. One key component is the interannual mass variability of the oceans obtained by direct observations from altimetry after removing steric signals. Further studies have been conducted on the steric model to quantify its accuracy at global and basin-scales. The results suggest a significant loss of water mass from the Oceans to the land on time-scales longer than 1-year. These signals are not reproduced in any of the models, which have poorly determined interannual fresh water fluxes. Brosche The development of the ideas and observational techniques related to the subject of our meeting "Tidal friction and the Earth's rotation", Bielefeld, September 1977 is one of the most fascinating books - not merely chapters! - of the modern history of science. Its genealogical tree is as intricate as that of mankind itself: There are dead ends and superfluous re-discoveries. Due to these circumstances and to the pure extent of the topic, it is impossible to give more than a few highlights here. The first relevant observational fact was discovered by the famous English astronomer E. Halley in 1695 (Berry, 1961). He simply could not arrive at an agreement between ancient and recent eclipses using a constant mean angular motion of the Moon. Instead, he had to introƯ duce an empirical acceleration term in the mean motion. Known as the "secular acceleration", it has ever since been a most challenging subƯ ject of celestial mechanics and a main branch of the genealogical tree already mentioned. In 1754, completely independently and almost certainly in ignorance of those specialists' activities, the German philosopher Kant established the idea of tidal friction as a decelerating mechanism for the rotation of the Earth (Felber, 1974). Although he made some errors in his rough computations, the majority of the constitutive elements of his concept have survived to the present day (Brosche, 1977).

Book excerpt: In the four years which elapsed between our first workshop on .Tidal Friction and the Earth's Rotation and the second, the proceedings of which are presented here, many of the disciplines involved made ad vances which we felt should be exchanged. We were encouraged by the good reception our first report met with. Of course, more insight often means more problems. Therefore, this volume contains new results and revisions of matters which previously appeared settled. We are certainly far from "final answers". For this reason, differing opinions on some issues are to be found in this book. Moreover, we have refrained from making mathematical symbols uniform to avoid the risk of errors and non-compatibility with the earlier work of an author. The two workshops have stimulated collaboration between participants working in various fields. The final versions of the contributions have already profited from these discussions. We are convinced that they will also influence further investigations. This advancement of our past and future aims is based on the very existence of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies and on the support we have received from its leading members. Book excerpt: Earth orientation parameters as observed by space-geodetic techniques show a broad spectrum of frequencies. Many efforts have been made to relate spectral peaks to geophysical processes, such as atmospheric or oceanic variations. However, the mechanisms of excitation of some typical oscillations are still unclear. In order to get insight into the rotational dynamics of the Earth, the non-linear gyroscopic Earth model DyMEG has been developed. The present paper studies the superposed effect of atmospheric and oceanic excitation on the free rotation of a viscoelastic gyro. In contrast to former investigations, period and damping of the Earth's free wobble (Chandler wobble) are generated by the gyro from geometrical and rheological parameters. Numerical results for polar motion in the time domain demonstrate that damping exists without explicit excitation but vanishes when regarding atmospheric and oceanic angular momentum. Simulated polar motion for the period from 1975 to 1994 forced by consistent atmospheric and oceanic angular momentum shows significant correlation with geodetic observations which indicates that the free gyroscopic model DyMEG is able to reproduce realistic variations of the Earth's rotation. Spectral analyses of both atmospheric and oceanic excitations give no hint for increased power in the Chandler frequency band as it was stated for the maintenance of the Chandler wobble in recent research studies. Thus, stochastic signals in the climate dynamics as caused by both the weather and oceanic mass redistributions are found to be a sufficient source to maintain the amplitude of the Earth's free wobble by resonant interaction.

Book excerpt: Changes in the globally integrated absolute angular momentum of the atmosphere were computed from the Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center NOGAPS wind analyses and compared to astronomically measured changes in length of day (LOD) obtained from the U.S. Naval Observatory, Washington D.C. The two time series were subjected to both time and frequency domain analysis. In the time domain, digital filters were used to isolate seasonal and subseasonal components. In the frequency domain, energy density, coherence and phase were computed over periods from 2 days to 1000 days. Over 90% of the total variance in astronomically determined LOD can be explained by meteorological phenomena. Fluctuations in LOD are coherent and in phase with fluctuations in the globally integrated angular momentum of the Earth's shell (crust, mantle and oceans; liquid core is excluded) at almost all periods less than 365 days. Annual fluctuations in LOD appear to originate in the midlatitudes and propagate equatorward. Subseasonal fluctuations (30 to 100 day periods) appear to be a tropical phenomena.
