Download or read book Crossing Linguistic Borders in Postcolonial Anglophone Africa written by Jemima Anderson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume discuss applied, pedagogical and ideological issues related to language use in selected countries in post-colonial Anglophone Africa. The collection represents new voices in linguistics from Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria, and is structured in four sections, covering the following themes: • languages in contact • language identity, ideology and policy • communication and issues of intelligibility • language in education The volume discusses the linguistic paradoxes and complexities that have emerged from the contact between English, (and/or) French and indigenous African languages. Some of the papers collected here discuss the characteristics, functions and peculiarities of the emerging varieties of languages that have developed in these post-colonial African States. Furthermore, the book offers empirical data on up-to-date research drawn from the expertise of budding and established scholars in the areas under discussion, and demonstrates the rich body of research that is developing in post-colonial Africa. Some of the areas covered in this volume include the linguistic products of bilingualism in Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, and new linguistic and sociocultural borders of Cameroonian Pidgin-Creole, which bridge the ideological gap between English and French speaking communities in Cameroon, unofficial language policy and language planning in the country and discourse choices in Cameroonian English. This book is an ideal resource for graduate students and researchers interested in the areas of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, discourse analysis and World Englishes.

International Colloquium and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contibutions in this volume constitute a selection of the papers presented at the 11th International Colloquium of the West-European (German-based) society for the history of linguistic ideas, the Studienkreis "Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft". The central theme of the conference was the history of linguistic and grammatical praxis. While this topic served, for the first time, as the central theme of a conference in the history of linguistics, the various types of linguistic praxis - language teaching and language learning, description and codification of languages, diffusion of linguistic knowledge, language planning and language policies - constitute the first attestation of linguistic preoccupations worldwide. The twenty-seven contributions in this volume cover the history of grammatical and linguistic praxis from Antiquity to the present day. While most of the papers deal with Europe and the United States, some of them analyse linguistic activity in relation to languages in Africa, Asia or Australia.

Download or read book Perspectives written by Sajitha Bashir and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Languages for Specific Purposes in History written by Nolwena Monnier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents twelve papers on the use of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSPs) throughout history. From Antiquity to the present time, contributors analyse how LSPs emerged both in Europe and in other parts of the world, such as Judea, North America, and China. The historical aspect of LSPs has generally not been studied in depth, despite being part of the global understanding of the phenomenon. All aspects of professional life are tackled in this book, including administration, commerce, diplomacy, medicine, legal studies, geography, sociology, mathematics and history. This volume will naturally appeal to historians but also to linguists, sociologists, and anyone interested in languages used in a professional context. It offers a better understanding of where LSPs come from, how they emerged and how they tend to become real specialties in the teaching of modern languages.

Download or read book The French Language and Questions of Identity written by Wendy Ayres-Bennett and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our choice of linguistic code is one of the most fundamental ways open to us of establishing our membership of some groups and our distance from others. This symbolic value of language may often leave it open to exploitation, especially by the state. The present volume demonstrates how the multi-faceted nature of the concept of identity makes its relationship with language both complex and unpredictable. Because of its particular historical and social characteristics, the French language provides especially fertile territory for the exploration of this theme. Four main axes stand out in the French context: 'institutionalised' identity, regional identity, social identity and competing identities. These themes are explored from different perspectives by leading experts from Britain, Europe and North America: Roger Baines, Kate Beeching, Danielle Bouverot, David Cowling, Edith Esch, François Gadet, Penelope Gardner-Chloros, David Hornsby, John E. Joseph, Dominique Lagorgette, Jacques Landrecies, Dawn Marley, Nicolas Pepin, Tim Pooley, Gilles Siouffi, Albert Valdman, Barbara von Gemmingen and Chantal Wionet.
Download or read book From Reading Writing Research to Practice written by Sophie Briquet-Duhazé and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers regularly seek to update their practice with newly-developed tools from the realm of research, with the aim of applying them directly in the classroom, particularly for teaching reading and writing. Thus, teachers’ continuing education is dependent on the effective dissemination and appropriation of research results. This book explores this problem from multiple angles, presenting research projects from France and Quebec, Canada. Using a variety of methods, including creating teaching materials and engaging classroom teachers in the research process, the authors demonstrate the importance of ownership and dissemination of research results in schools. Although this necessity sometimes complicates the work of researchers, it is vital to develop and maintain the relationship between reading–writing research and its practical applications.
