Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Of All That Ends

Download or read book Of All That Ends written by Günter Grass and published by HMH. This book was released on 2016-12-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A final book like no other” from the Nobel Prize–winning author of The Tin Drum: poetry and meditations on writing, aging, and living until the end (The Irish Times). In spite of the trials of old age, and with the end in sight, Günter Grass weaves his life’s reflections together into a witty and elegiac swansong: love letters, soliloquies, jealous musings, social satire, and moments of happiness long to be shared. As the inimitable German fabulist lives his remaining days, his passion for writing spurs in him new life. His final work is a creation filled with wisdom and defiance. In a striking interplay of poetry, lyric prose, and drawings, this diverse assemblage is a moving farewell gift—a sensual, melancholy summation of a life fully lived. “Elegant musings on dying and, most poignantly, living.” —Kirkus Reviews “A glorious gift, a final salute true to the singular creativity of the most human, and humane, of artists.” —The Irish Times “A thoughtful, uncompromising meditation on death and aging . . . He describes loss, change, and memory with a combination of melancholy and wit.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Parenting in the Age of Attention Snatchers

Download or read book Parenting in the Age of Attention Snatchers written by Lucy Jo Palladino and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are your kids glued to their screens? Here is a practical, step-by-step guide that gives parents the tools to teach children, from toddlers to teens, how to gain control of their technology use. As children spend more of their time on tablets and smartphones, using apps specially engineered to capture their attention, parents are becoming concerned about the effects of so much technology use—and they feel powerless to intervene. They want their kids to be competent and competitive in their use of technology, but they also want to prevent the attention and behavioral problems that can develop from overuse. In this guide, Lucy Jo Palladino doesn’t demonize technology; instead she gives parents the tools to help children understand and control their attention—and to recognize and resist when their attention is being "snatched." Palladino’s straightforward, evidence-based approach applies to kids of all ages. Parents will also learn the critical difference between voluntary and involuntary attention, new findings about brain development, and what puts children at risk for attention disorders.

Book Latinx Mental Health From Surviving to Thriving

Download or read book Latinx Mental Health From Surviving to Thriving written by Delgado-Romero, Edward A. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite similar vulnerability to mental illness as the general population, adults within the Latinx community often do not receive treatment for severe mental illnesses. Latinx communities face health disparities and lack of access to mental healthcare due to language barriers, lack of health insurance coverage, lack of cultural competence from healthcare practitioners, and more. It is essential to promote positive mental health practices within the Latinx community and to educate healthcare practitioners in cultural competence. Latinx Mental Health: From Surviving to Thriving focuses on the research and practical experiences that foster cultural resilience and strength. Rather than advocating for an assimilative model of coping, this book focuses on the way that Latinx issues can be studied and addressed in a culturally and linguistically appropriate way. This publication seeks to inspire a new generation of mental health researchers and practitioners to engage with the Latinx population in a strength-based way. Covering topics such as LGBTQ+ Latinxs, health disparities, and intergenerational trauma, this premier reference work is an excellent resource for psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, sociologists, government officials, healthcare professionals, students and faculty of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Book World Literature Cosmopolitanism Globality

Download or read book World Literature Cosmopolitanism Globality written by Gesine Müller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From today’s vantage point it can be denied that the confidence in the abilities of globalism, mobility, and cosmopolitanism to illuminate cultural signification processes of our time has been severely shaken. In the face of this crisis, a key concept of this globalizing optimism as World Literature has been for the past twenty years necessarily is in the need of a comprehensive revision. World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality: Beyond, Against, Post, Otherwise offers a wide range of contributions approaching the blind spots of the globally oriented Humanities for phenomena that in one way or another have gone beyond the discourses, aesthetics, and political positions of liberal cosmopolitanism and neoliberal globalization. Departing basically (but not exclusively) from different examples of Latin American literatures and cultures in globalized contexts, this volume provides innovative insights into critical readings of World Literature and its related conceptualizations. A timely book that embraces highly innovative perspectives, it will be a mustread for all scholars involved in the field of the global dimensions of literature.

Book Decolonizing Science in Latin American Art

Download or read book Decolonizing Science in Latin American Art written by Joanna Page and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Projects that bring the ‘hard’ sciences into art are increasingly being exhibited in galleries and museums across the world. In a surge of publications on the subject, few focus on regions beyond Europe and the Anglophone world. Decolonizing Science in Latin American Art assembles a new corpus of art-science projects by Latin American artists, ranging from big-budget collaborations with NASA and MIT to homegrown experiments in artists’ kitchens. While they draw on recent scientific research, these art projects also ‘decolonize’ science. If increasing knowledge of the natural world has often gone hand-in-hand with our objectification and exploitation of it, the artists studied here emphasize the subjectivity and intelligence of other species, staging new forms of collaboration and co-creativity beyond the human. They design technologies that work with organic processes to promote the health of ecosystems, and seek alternatives to the logics of extractivism and monoculture farming that have caused extensive ecological damage in Latin America. They develop do-it-yourself, open-source, commons-based practices for sharing creative and intellectual property. They establish critical dialogues between Western science and indigenous thought, reconnecting a disembedded, abstracted form of knowledge with the cultural, social, spiritual, and ethical spheres of experience from which it has often been excluded. Decolonizing Science in Latin American Art interrogates how artistic practices may communicate, extend, supplement, and challenge scientific ideas. At the same time, it explores broader questions in the field of art, including the relationship between knowledge, care, and curation; nonhuman agency; art and utility; and changing approaches to participation. It also highlights important contributions by Latin American thinkers to themes of global significance, including the Anthropocene, climate change and environmental justice.
