Book Jos Carlos Mari tegui

Download or read book Jos Carlos Mari tegui written by José Carlos Mariátegui and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: José Carlos Mariátegui is one of Latin America’s most profound but overlooked thinkers. A self-taught journalist, social scientist, and activist from Peru, he was the first to emphasize that those fighting for the revolutionary transformation of society must adapt classical Marxist theory to the particular conditions of Latin American. He also stressed that indigenous peoples must take an active, if not leading, role in any revolutionary struggle. Today Latin America is the scene of great social upheaval. More progressive governments are in power than ever before, and grassroots movements of indigenous peoples, workers, and peasants are increasingly shaping the political landscape. The time is perfect for a rediscovery of Mariátegui, who is considered an intellectual precursor of today’s struggles in Latin America but virtually unknown in the English-speaking world. This volume collects his essential writings, including many that have never been translated and some that have never been published. The scope of this collection, masterful translation, and thoughtful commentary make it an essential book for scholars of Latin America and all of those fighting for a new world, waiting to be born.

Book Ecuadorean Peruvian Rivalry in the Upper Amazon

Download or read book Ecuadorean Peruvian Rivalry in the Upper Amazon written by William L. Krieg and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to provide the background required for an understanding of the boundary dispute between Ecuador and Peru, a hardy perennial among inter-American controversies. It is not designed to propound any particular thesis, much less to take sides in the dispute. Evaluation of the significance of the positions adopted by the parties over the years have been included. Primary attention has been focused on the period after the entry into effect of the Rio Protocol of 1942 which attempted to fix the boundary between the rival states and which was guaranteed by Argentina, Brazil, Chile and the United States. Very little has previously been published on the efforts of the guarantors to work out the problems which arose in the execution of the protocol. These problems proved so intractable that the demarcation of the boundary has not yet been completed, leaving the guarantors with a residual responsibility which they may yet be called upon to discharge. In addition to the survey of the post-1942 period, it was considered desirable to include information regarding the origins of the dispute and earlier attempts at solutions. Much of this material will be appearing for the first time in English.

Book Human Creation Between Reality and Illusion

This book was released on 2006-06-30 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying quickly illusion with deception, we tend to oppose it to the reality of life. However, investigating in this collection of essays illusion's functions in the Arts, which thrives upon illusion and yet maintains its existential roots and meaningfullness in the real, we might wonder about the nature of reality itself. Does not illusion open the seeming confines of factual reality into horizons of imagination which transform it? Does it not, like art, belong essentially to the makeup of human reality? Book Ensayos sobre cr tica literaria

Download or read book Ensayos sobre cr tica literaria written by Antonio Alatorre and published by El Colegio de Mexico AC. This book was released on 2013-08-24 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Ever Faithful

  • Author : David Sartorius
  • Publisher : Duke University Press

  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Ever Faithful written by David Sartorius and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known for much of the nineteenth century as "the ever-faithful isle," Cuba did not earn its independence from Spain until 1898, long after most American colonies had achieved emancipation from European rule. In this groundbreaking history, David Sartorius explores the relationship between political allegiance and race in nineteenth-century Cuba. Challenging assumptions that loyalty to the Spanish empire was the exclusive province of the white Cuban elite, he examines the free and enslaved people of African descent who actively supported colonialism. By claiming loyalty, many black and mulatto Cubans attained some degree of social mobility, legal freedom, and political inclusion in a world where hierarchy and inequality were the fundamental lineaments of colonial subjectivity. Sartorius explores Cuba's battlefields, plantations, and meeting halls to consider the goals and limits of loyalty. In the process, he makes a bold call for fresh perspectives on imperial ideologies of race and on the rich political history of the African diaspora.

Book Alexander von Humboldt s Transatlantic Personae

Download or read book Alexander von Humboldt s Transatlantic Personae written by Vera Kutzinski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Alexander von Humboldt? Was he really a lone genius? Was he another European apologist for colonialism in the Americas or the father of Latin American independence? Was he a roving Romanticist, or did his sensibilities belong to the Enlightenment? Naturalist, philosopher, historian, and proto-sociologist--to name just some of the fields to which he contributed--, Humboldt is impossible to contain in a single identity or definition. His voluminous writings range across so many different fields of knowledge that his scholarly-scientific personae multiplied even during his lifetime, and they have continued to proliferate since his death in 1859. A household word throughout the nineteenth century, Humboldt was eventually eclipsed by Charles Darwin (whose own travels had been motivated by Humboldt’s) and disappeared from view for much of the twentieth century, notably in the United States. The essays in this collection testify to the renewed interest that Alexander von Humboldt’s multi-faceted work is inspiring in the twenty-first century, especially among cultural and literary historians from both sides of the Atlantic. This book was originally published as a special issue of Atlantic Studies.
