Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Enquiry Into the Life and Legend of Michael Scot After some considerable time spent in making collections for the work which is now submitted to the public, I became aware that a biography of Michael Scot was in existence which had been composed as early as the dose of the sixteenth century. This is the work of Bernardino Baldi of Urbino, who was born in 1553. He studied medicine at Padua, but soon turned his attention to mathematics, especially to the historical developments of that science. Taking holy orders, he became Abbot of Guastalla in 1586, and in the quiet of that cloister found time to produce his work 'De le vite de Matematici' of which the biography of Scot forms a part. He died in 1617. This discovery led me at first to think that my original plan might with some advantage be modified. Baldi had evidently enjoyed great advantages in writing his life of Scot. His time lay nearer to that of Scot by three hundred years than our own does. He was a native of Italy, where so large a part of Scot's life was passed. He had studied at Padua, the last of the great schools in which Averroes, whom Scot first introduced to the Latins, still held intellectual sway. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Scot was a legendary scholar of the Middle Ages. He was born in 1175 in the border regions of Scotland and northern England. He was an advisor court astrologer to Emperor Frederick II. Scot studied in Oxford and Paris. He was a theologian and appears to have been ordained by Pope Honorius III. He knew many languages and translated important texts from Greek and Arabic, including Aristotle. It was a contemporary of Fibonacci and it is possible he influenced the presentation of his famous Fibonnaci sequence. Noted during for his scholarship in his lifetime, Scot quickly became a legend in the years following his death c. 1232. He gained posthumous fame variously viewed as an alchemist, occultist, sorcerer, and warlock. He is the only Scot to appear in Dante's Divine Comedy. Originally published in 1897, Brown's work remains an important full-length enquiry into Scot's life and legend.

Book De Animalibus Michael Scot s Arabic Latin Translation Volume 3 Books XV XIX Generation of Animals

Download or read book De Animalibus Michael Scot s Arabic Latin Translation Volume 3 Books XV XIX Generation of Animals written by Aafke M.I. van Oppenraay and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle's De Animalibus was an important source of zoological knowledge both for the ancient Greeks and for the medieval Arabs and Europeans. The work was twice translated into Latin, once directly from the Greek by William of Moerbeke and once, by way of the intermediary of an existing Arabic translation, by Michael Scot. Of these, Scot's translation is the oldest. The De Animalibus is composed of three sections: 'History of Animals' (10 books), 'Parts of Animals' (4 books) and 'Generation of Animals' (5 books). The present volume contains the first critical edition of Scot's translation of the last section. Editions of his translations of the two preceding sections are in preparation. The volume includes very complete Latin-Arabic and Arabic-Latin word indexes and, as a supplement, the first complete word index to the original Greek text of 'Generation of Animals'. The volume for the first time makes available to the scholarly world a version of Aristotle's 'Generation of Animals' that has long been one of the main sources of knowledge in Europe on the subject. Being a faithful translation of a translation produced by a Syriac-speaking Christian, the text also contributes to our knowledge of Middle Arabic.

Book The Matter of Araby in Medieval England

Download or read book The Matter of Araby in Medieval England written by Dorothee Metlitzki and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To understand the significance of Arabic material in medieval literature, we must recognize the concrete reality of Islam in the medieval European experience. Intimate contacts beginning with the Crusades yielded considerable knowledge about "Araby" beyond the merely stereotypical and propagandistic. Arabian culture was manifest in scientific and philosophical investigations; and the Arab presence pervaded medieval romance, where caricatures of Saracens were not merely a catering to popular taste but were a way of coping emotionally with a real threat. In England as well as in continental Europe, Islam figured in the best intellectual efforts of the age. Dorothee Metlitzki considers "Scientific and Philosophical Learning" in Part One of this book and discusses the transmission of Arabian culture, by way of the Crusades, and through the courts of Sicily and Spain. She sees the work of Latin translators from the Arabic in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries as the background of a medieval heritage of learning that expressed itself in the subject matter, theme, and imagery not only of a scholar-poet like Chaucer but also of the poets of popular romance. In Part Two, "The Literary Heritage," Metlitzki deals with Arabian source books, with Araby in history and romance, and with Mandeville's Travels. She concludes with a general assessment of the cultural force of Araby in England during the middle Ages.
