Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esprit de corps has played a significant role in the cultural and political history of the last 300 years. Through several historical case studies, Luis de Miranda shows how this phrase acts as a combat concept with a clear societal impact. He also reveals how interconnected, yet distinct, French, English and American modern intellectual and political thought is. In the end, this is a cautionary analysis of past and current ideologies of ultra-unified human ensembles, a recurrent historical and theoretical fabulation the author calls 'ensemblance'.

Download or read book Tracing the Shadow of Secrecy and Government Transparency in Eighteenth Century France written by Nicole Bauer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces changing attitudes towards secrecy in eighteenth-century France, and explores the cultural origins of ideas surrounding government transparency. The idea of keeping secrets, both on the part of individuals and on the part of governments, came to be viewed with more suspicion as the century progressed. By the eve of the French Revolution, writers voicing concerns about corruption saw secrecy as part and parcel of despotism, and this shift went hand in hand with the rise of the idea of transparency. The author argues that the emphasis placed on government transparency, especially the mania for transparency that dominated the French Revolution, resulted from the surprising connections and confluence of changing attitudes towards honour, religious movements, rising nationalism, literature, and police practices. Exploring religious ideas that associated secrecy with darkness and wickedness, and proto-nationalist discourse that equated foreignness with secrecy, this book demonstrates how cultural shifts in eighteenth-century France influenced its politics. Covering the period of intense fear during the French Revolution and the paranoia of the Reign of Terror, the book highlights the complex interplay of culture and politics and provides insights into our attitudes towards secrecy today.

Download or read book Revolution written by Ilan Rachum and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although there are scores of books on the theme of revolution, Ilan Rachum's study is unique in its analysis from the perspective of political discourse. It examines how the term 'revolution' entered Western political vocabulary through a historical survey covering the early Renaissance to the French Revolution. Antecedents of the term 'revolution' originated in Italy, from where they spread with modifications to France and finally England. Rachum also examines the use and significance of the term during the Enlightenment, the emergence of the epithet 'American Revolution', and the rebounding effects of this term on French intellectuals on the eve of 1789. This fascinating study will excite historians, political scientists, and anyone with an interest in the history of ideas that have had a lasting impact on how we perceive and describe social change.
