Book Reconciling Truths

Download or read book Reconciling Truths written by Kim Stanton and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hundreds of commissions of inquiry have been struck in Canada since before Confederation, but many of their recommendations are never implemented. Reconciling Truths explores the role and implications of public inquiries, particularly their limits and possibilities in an era of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Providing examples and in-depth critical analysis of the leadership and process of various commissions, Kim Stanton offers practical guidance on how to improve their effectiveness. This forthright study affirms the potential of inquiries to create a dialogue about issues of public importance, paving the way for policy change and shifting the dominant Canadian narrative over time.

Book excerpt: « Public inquiries have an enormous impact on public policy in Canada, serving as fact-finder, investigator of systemic failures, and proposer of reforms in diverse areas of public concern. To accomplish all these varied and important objectives, the public inquiry has of necessity become a creative and flexible process. Assembling many voices and perspectives, Public Inquiries in Canada: Law and Practice, 2nd Edition provides guidance on how best to conduct the public inquiry process from beginning to end. Practical in tone and providing a thorough overview of all stages of the inquiry process, Public Inquiries in Canada: Law and Practice, 2nd Edition is essential reading for all those involved in a public inquiry: lawyers, commissioners of inquiries (including judges), members of a commission team, witnesses, government staff, and the media. Even members of the public who have not been directly affected by the events leading to a public inquiry will find this book to contain a compelling discussion of what has become a vital tool in Canadian public policy. »--Page 4 de la couverture.

Book Weaving a Canadian Allegory

Download or read book Weaving a Canadian Allegory written by Loretta Czernis and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loretta Czernis applies her sociological training in document analysis to study one government prescription for what ails Canadians. The Report of the Task Force on Canadian Unity rewrote Canada by reinventing patriotism, essentially inviting Canadians to imagine a new Canada. The Report itself is the product of what she calls the “federal writing machine” which exists to continually rewrite and thus reinvent Canada. Czernis’ contextual reading of the Report occurs on two levels: reading technically, she examines the Report’s anonymous writing style that asks readers to imitate its own conclusions (be patriotic, buy a flag, shop at home). Gestural reading invites reading as performance. Canadians are invited to participate in reshaping Canada by reading Canada allegorically, as a social body, capable of changing its form. What a document may intend is not always the same as what is read into it. Mistakes can and do occur in the reading. Czernis suggests that these “mistakes” constitute a significant form of resistance to the anonymous writing machine. Weaving a Canadian Allegory will be of special interest to Canadianists, sociologists and to those involved in cultural, political and textual studies.
