La dignité humaine et la dignité de Dieu sont-elles compatibles l'une avec l'autre ? Plus encore, est-il possible d'envisager qu'elles se promeuvent réciproquement, l'une grâce à l'autre ? Les rapports entre dignité humaine et divine ont très tôt préoccupé la théologie chrétienne, quand il a fallu montrer que l'incarnation et la kénose du Christ n'ôtaient rien à la dignité de Dieu, et qu'elles étaient la voie par laquelle l'humain retrouvait la sienne. Si de cette manière Dieu n'est pas étranger à notre condition humaine, c'est alors l'humanité commune qui est le lieu pour être digne et agir dignement, et en premier lieu là où la dignité humaine est à l'épreuve de sa vulnérabilité ou des dénis qu'on lui oppose. Dans le volet théologique de ce volume, quatre contributions montrent l'actualité de la question, en soulignant l'importance d'un « agir digne », sans lequel la dignité est réduite à une valeur incantatoire. Or le combat pour la dignité, sous ses multiples formes, c'est aussi la dignité elle-même qui se fraie un chemin d'humanisation : ce chemin qui n'est pas étranger à celui qu'emprunte l'agir de Dieu, digne de lui en tant que salut de l'humain.

Book excerpt: Object of fascination and fantasy, the female body can be idealized, reified or shrouded. “It is we who make women what they are worth and that is why they are worthless”, proclaimed Mirabeau in the days of the Enlightenment, to which Aragon later replied: “Woman is the future of Man”. The ambiguities of the female body are therein exposed. This work examines the relationship between the female body and biomedicine. Many possibilities are offered to women through biomedical techniques: from assistance to procreate (with assisted reproduction) to refusal to do so (contraception, voluntary sterilization, termination of pregnancy); to be informed of genetic predispositions (through the use of available genetic tests); or to improve their physical appearance with cosmetic surgery. But a recurrent question arises: with its rapid progress and its extreme medicalization of the body, can biomedicine liberate women? Or rather, given the risks of the commodification of the body or its parts, is it not a source of exploitation ? The authors of this work, jurists, anthropologists, philosophers, sociologists and doctors, have explored these questions. The contributions from nineteen countries in this international multidisciplinary study analyse the reality of the amazing developments of biomedicine on the female body. Numerous systems are compared for the first time; European, African, North and South American, but also Chinese and Japanese. Beyond highlighting differences, and identifying similarities in the development of “enhancement medicine”, the objective of this work is ultimately to show the complexity surrounding the question of a woman’s freedom over her body and the extent to which this is limited by the State.

En même temps, la question du corps se renouvelle et s'avère un premier impératif de l'heure, au milieu des controverses les plus cruciales provoquées par les innovations de la science médicale, l'ingénierie génétique, les technologies thérapeutiques, bref la " révolution biologique ". Au vrai, comme s'il le suscitait même, le progrès des sciences s'accompagne du retour en force de l'humain, naguère déclaré " de trop ". Ainsi en va-t-il dans toutes les sphères de la société, du politique à l'économie, de la médecine au droit. Ce sont justement ces différents champs d'applications concrètes de ta référence à la dignité humaine, mais aussi son histoire, que se sont répartis les six auteurs réunis en ce petit volume, trois Français et trois Québécois. Un constat au moins s'impose : nous sommes restés captifs d'une énigme mystérieuse, inéluctable. La reconnaissance de la dignité humaine relève d'une exigence antérieure à toute philosophie. Le cri d'Antigone retentit toujours contre tout effort de réduire l'être humain et sa transcendance ; il est à jamais témoin d'une indéfinissable dignité que l'on peut davantage reconnaître que connaître, procédant de ce qui " élève chacun de nous au-delà de lui-même ".
