Download or read book The Architecture of Confinement written by Anoma Pieris and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this global and comparative study of Pacific War incarceration environments we explore the arc of the Pacific Basin as an archipelagic network of militarized penal sites. Grounded in spatial, physical and material analyses focused on experiences of civilian internees, minority citizens, and enemy prisoners of war, the book offers an architectural and urban understanding of the unfolding history and aftermath of World War II in the Pacific. Examples are drawn from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, and North America. The Architecture of Confinement highlights the contrasting physical facilities, urban formations and material character of various camps and the ways in which these uncover different interpretations of wartime sovereignty. The exclusion and material deprivation of selective populations within these camp environments extends the practices by which land, labor and capital are expropriated in settler-colonial societies; practices critical to identity formation and endemic to their legacies of liberal democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mosquitoes, Communities, and Public Health in Texas focuses on 87 known species of mosquitoes found throughout Texas. It includes information on the ecology, medical and public health importance, and biological diversity of each species. In addition, it provides detailed identification keys for both larval and adult stages of all mosquito genera and species known to occur in Texas, along a review of surveillance and control strategies. The expansion of invasive mosquitoes from other regions (including Mexico), together with climate change occurrences increase the likelihood for an increase in diseases, such as West Nile Virus, Yellow Fever, Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika. This unique work is the first unified reference and resource rich in mosquito information for medical entomologists, mosquito and vector control professionals, pest management professionals, biologists, environmentalists, wildlife professionals, government regulators, instructors of medical entomology and public health professionals who have disease or vector responsibilities, mosquito taxonomists, epidemiologists, entomology students, academia, pest control industry, and libraries, etc., with utility for medical, veterinary and health professionals. - Brings into one volume the previously fragmented or unavailable information on the species of mosquitoes found in Texas and neighboring states of Mexico - Provides a variety of audiences with key data on mosquito biology, distribution and how to identify each - Includes a geographic distribution map, habitat associations, and medical importance on Zika, West Nile virus, Dengue and Chikungunya for each species
Download or read book Treatment and Prevention of Malaria written by Henry M. Staines and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malaria has defeated previous efforts at eradication and remains a massive global public health problem despite being readily preventable and treatable. It is a devastating disease that also extracts huge economic costs from the poorest countries in endemic regions. Starting with an overview of the disease and its current political, financial and technical context, this Milestones in Drug Therapy volume describes the history, chemistry, mechanisms of action and resistance, preclinical and clinical use, pharmacokinetics and safety and tolerability of the current range of antimalarial drugs. There is particular emphasis on artemisinins and related peroxides, as these drugs have now become the frontline treatment for malaria. Next generation antimalarials, molecular markers for detecting resistance, the importance of diagnostics and disease prevention are also covered in detail.
Download or read book My Gawd and Other Stories written by Fairbanks and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Gawd! and Other Stories by Fairbanksjust the one word, like Moses, like Prince. My Gawd! Is that allowed? Can you write that? If it was a film, it would be rated R: adults only. But not rated X by any means; this is not erotica. Thats the fun of the clever writing. Its fiction! It sometimes gets very close to the line, but then it backs off. There are only a couple of jolts in retrospect. Some stories have no sex at all. (Does sex between insects count?) This is a collection of thirteen short stories set out as one per month plus New Years. It is fun to take up the authors suggestion and read the last story first (and then again at the end). This tantalizing New Years story is written as a play, and the other one is a humorous narrative poem. The stories are full of interesting and varied charactersyoung, old, male, female, ordinary, eccentric, naughty, and nice. Settings include the authors backyard, Central Australia, other rural backgrounds, and Canberra. Each short story is different, holding the readers interest and moving along without dragging. There are no boring bits at all. There is poetry in the prose, touching descriptions of setting and character. Two of the stories are longer, giving the reader the chance to follow an interesting plot and the characters more fully. Watch out for the famous Fairbanks twist! Lots of marketing potential with this one! Put it on your bedside table and read one story a night for fun and for titillation. The next Fifty Shades? The naughty outback Aussies version. My gawd!
