Book excerpt: The Book of Enoch is an ancient religious text, traditionally ascribed to the Judeo-Christian prophet Enoch, the ancestor of the biblical figure, Noah. Some scholars estimate that some parts of the book vary widely in age from several hundred years before Christ to the last parts in the century before the birth of Jesus. This text is widely considered non-canonical although it is accepted that it is a genuine attempt to record information as best the authors were able in the pre-Christian era. In the text, Enoch is a figure who receives direct personal revelation from God. He sees the magnificence of God and begins to preach to those around him against sin. He warns that the sinners will be winnowed and that God himself will appear on Mount Sinai to judge the humans as well as the fallen angels on Earth. Among the more controversial material within this text is the detailed account it gives of fallen angels on earth and their cursed offspring, the Nephilim. Azazel features heavily as the instigator of metal weapon production, the use of cosmetics and advocate of widespread promiscuity and fornication. In this book, the figure of Enoch is charged with the knowledge of God’s chosen and brutal punishment for the Nephilim, their human mothers and their Angel fathers. August Dillman’s translation from the Ethiopian is part of his extensive work translating biblical era manuscripts and this particular version is augmented with his observations, Latin excerpts and a stunning foreword by R. H. Charles. One of the most important apocryphic works of the Second Temple Period is Enoch. According to the biblical narrative (Genesis 5:21-24), Enoch lived only 365 years (far less than the other patriarchs in the period before the Flood). Enoch "walked with God; then he was no more for God took him." The original language of most of this work was, in all likelihood, Aramaic (an early Semitic language). Although the original version was lost in antiquity, portions of a Greek translation were discovered in Egypt and quotations were known from the Church Fathers. The discovery of the texts from Qumran Cave 4 has finally provided parts of the Aramaic original. In the fragment exhibited here, humankind is called on to observe how unchanging nature follows God's will. The Book of Enoch is a pseudoepigraphal work (a work that claims to be by a biblical character). The Book of Enoch was not included in either the Hebrew or most Christian biblical canons, but could have been considered a sacred text by the sectarians. The original Aramaic version was lost until the Dead Sea fragments were discovered.

The last two studies discuss two Qumranic apocalypses (4Q246, 11QNJ) which reveal the richness and the diversity of the theological conceptions circulating within the Apocalyptic Tradition. The book offers a most up-to-date survey of research on these manuscripts and makes a fresh contribution to the understanding of Qumran and of the Apocalyptic Tradition.

Book excerpt: As the Book of Enoch is, in some respects, the most notable extant apocalyptic work outside the canonical Scriptures, it will not be inappropriate to offer a few remarks here on the Apocalyptic Literature generally. In writing about the books which belong to this literature, Prof. Burkitt says very pointedly that "they are the most characteristic survival of what I will venture to call, with all its narrowness and its incoherence, the heroic age of Jewish history, the age when the nation attempted to realize in action the part of the peculiar people of God. It ended in catastrophe, but the nation left two successors, the Christian Church and the Rabbinical Schools, each of which carried on some of the old national aims. And of the two it was the Christian Church that was most faithful to the ideas enshrined in the Apocalypses, and it did consider itself, not without some reason, the fulfilment of those ideas. What is wanted, therefore, in studying the Apocalypses is, above all, sympathy with the ideas that underlie them, and especially with the belief in the New Age. And those who believe that in Christianity a new Era really did dawn for us ought, I think, to have that sympathy. . . . We study the Apocalypses to learn how our spiritual ancestors hoped again that God would make all right in the end; and that we, their children, are here today studying them is an indication that their hope was not wholly unfounded."

Orlov examines the tradition about the seventh antediluvian patriarch Enoch, tracing its development from its roots in the Mesopotamian lore to the Second Temple apocalyptic texts and later rabbinic and Hekhalot materials where Enoch is often identified as the supreme angel Metatron. The first part of the book explores the imagery of the celestial roles and titles of the seventh antediluvian hero in Mesopotamian, Enochic and Hekhalot materials. The analysis of the celestial roles and titles shows that the transition from the figure of patriarch Enoch to the figure of angel Metatron occurred already in the Second Temple Enochic materials, namely, in 2 (Slavonic) Enoch, a Jewish work, traditionally dated to the first century CE. The second part of the book demonstrates that mediatorial polemics with the traditions of the exalted patriarchs and prophets played an important role in facilitating the transition from Enoch to Metatron in the Second Temple period.

In this volume Elekosi F. Lafitaga reexamines Matthew’s vision of the sheep and goats in the judgment of the nations, which are often interpreted as metaphors for the saved and the condemned. Lafitaga views these images in the wider context of the rhetoric of apocalyptic communication stretching back to Matthew 3. This broader context reveals that the vision of Matthew 25 serves to exhort Israel in the here and now according to the torah, with salvation for Israel involving an indispensable responsibility to love and serve humanity. Central to Lafitaga’s analysis is the highly probable scenario that the material in Matthew is dependent on the Book of Dreams (1 Enoch 83–90).

The first book of Enoch is an Old Testament apocrypha, not included in the Hebrew Bible, it is not part of the Bible in greek called the LXX (Septuagint) and is not part of, at least today, even in the Christian Bible. Jewish historians Flavius Josephus and Philo of Alexandria does not mention him among the canonical books of Judaism in the first century AD, although we know that in the past was often used in the Jewish world and even the early fathers of the Christian Church, there are indeed some similarities between steps and idioms characteristic of the New Testament, and this book. In medieval times they are lost mysteriously traces except for a few rare quote, like those of Syncellus and Cedrenus of the ninth century it was no longer used, and 1 Enoch remained an unknown and mysterious text up to '700. Tradition says the patriarch Enoch author of well three hundred sixty-six books. The most famous are the first book of Enoch, the second book of Enoch (also called Book of Secrets of Enoch) and the third book of Enoch (Enoch or the Apocalypse). According to historians these books do not actually contain words attributed directly to the ancient biblical patriarch described in Genesis because he would theoretically lived a few thousand years before it appeared in the books attributed to him. For that 1 Enoch it is also defined pseudoepigraph, or a writing attributed to an ancient patriarch with a literary device to confer an aura of authenticity and authority contained. Enoch means in Hebrew "the initiate." According to the book of Enoch Genesis is a descendant of Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve born after the murder of Abel. Not to be confused with the son of Cain, also named Enoch.
