Download or read book Enid written by Glen V. McIntyre and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enid is the eighth-largest city in Oklahoma and the largest city in northwest Oklahoma. Its origins can be traced to September 16, 1893, the day of the Cherokee Outlet Land Run, when more than 100,000 people raced for six million acres of land. The town quickly grew as inhabitants came to Enid to register claims at the land office. As the seat of Garfield County, Enid was the hub for numerous railroads, including the Rock Island, Santa Fe, and Frisco lines. It was already a prosperous town when in 1916 the Garber-Covington oil field was discovered east of town, guaranteeing that the area would become a center of petroleum production. The community has nurtured interesting people, such as Marquis James, a writer who won two Pulitzer Prizes, and H.H. Champlin, founder of the Champlin Refining Company. Enid: 1893-1945 features these residents' stories and many others that made the period Enid's first golden age.

Download or read book Check Six written by Jim Curran and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were no mission limits for a pilot in the Pacific during World War II; unlike in Europe, you flew until it was time to go home. So it was for James Jug Curran, all the way from New Guinea to the Philippines with the 348th Fighter Group, the first P-47 Thunderbolt outfit in the Pacific. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Curran volunteered to try flying in the blue yonder, and trained as an Army fighter pilot. He got his wish to fly the P-47 in the Pacific, going into combat in August 1943, in New Guinea, and later helping start the Black Rams fighter squadron. The heavy U.S. Thunderbolts were at first curious to encounter the nimble, battle-hardened Japanese in aerial combat, but soon the American pilots gained skill of their own and their planes proved superior. Bombers on both sides could fall to fighters, but the fighters themselves were eyeball to eyeball, best man win. Check Six! is an aviation chronicle that brings the reader into flight, then into the fight, throughout the Pacific War and back. This work, from someone who was there, captures the combat experience of our aviators in the Pacific, aided by pertinent excerpts from the official histories of units that Jug Curran flew with. It is a tale of perseverance, as Curran flew over 200 combat missions, and with the men of the 348th Fighter Group proved the Thunderbolts great capability as they battled their way against a stubborn and deadly foe. This work increases the body of knowledge on the critical role of aviation in the Pacific War, as U.S. fighter pilots took the lead in our counteroffensive against the short-lived island Empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short memoirs in the MEADOWOOD ANTHOLOGY gives us insight into the commonplace happenings and also the remarkable events that occurred in the lives of possibly the greatest generation in our American history. Living in Meadowood Retirement Community we have residents from a variety of professional and military backgrounds who have fascinating stories to write from the Great Depression forward to WW II, the Korean and Vietnam Wars including one on the early days of Arab Spring. We have memoirs from authors who experienced the grimness of wars and somehow were able to write with a subtle humor, and at times also with a sense of the ridiculous; as we read about one day in the life of a young woman, an Italian Resistant Fighter. We have one memoir by a resident that begins with a Jewish Russian ancestor of her husband being conscripted into the Czars Army. He eventually escaped to Israel. One half century later the descendents of this man find safety in America. These are only a few of many stories of victims persecuted for political or religious belief systems and who eventually find sanctuary in our country and later in Meadowood Retirement Community. Aging in Place, a charming expression we have coined, does not mean we exist in an invisible cozy cacoon. We have monthly lectures programmed by one of our retired professors who invites world famous academically acclaimed lecturers, who guide us through new international policies of countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. We also have residents who prefer to do their own thing. One resident moved in and announced that he had never in 20 years had time to read a book. He had been one of the driving forces at NASA; as in sending a man to the moon. He now volunteers with Meals-On-Wheels. He still has not read his first book. Our miniature memoirs, our life stories, are the treasures we leave to our children: perhaps to give to their own.

Download or read book Fatal Army Air Forces Aviation Accidents in the United States 1941 1945 August 1944 December 1945 appendices indexes written by Anthony J. Mireles and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the air over the continental United States was a virtual third front. The little-known statistics are alarming: the Army Air Forces lost more than 4,500 aircraft in combat against Japanese army and naval air forces in the war. During the same time, the AAF lost more than 7,100 aircraft in the United States to accidents in training and transportation. Such accidents claimed the lives of more than 15,530 pilots, crewmembers and ground personnel, and the stories of their deaths are largely forgotten. This work chronicles the 6,350 known fatal AAF aircraft accidents that occurred in the continental United States from January 1941 through December 1945. Each crash summary, based on official records, provides details such as crash location and cause, the people involved and the type and number of aircraft. An aircraft serial number index, a record of AAF aircraft still listed as missing, crash statistics and a directory of AAF stations in the United States are included.
