This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social protection transfers are the most widespread measures adopted to stabilize refugee households’ livelihoods and alleviate their food insecurity. This paper contributes to the literature on the effectiveness of different types of support on livelihoods and productivity outcomes of one of the largest refugee populations in Africa. Taking advantage of a unique panel dataset representative of the largest part of the 1.4 million people hosted in the Uganda refugees’ settlements, this paper investigates how different social protection interventions (cash and food) are effective in alleviating food insecurity and in contributing to beneficiaries’ self-reliance. The results show that the effectiveness of transfers depends on beneficiaries’ characteristics, on context specificity, and on the outcome assessed.

Book Humanitarian Assistance and the Politics of Self reliance

Download or read book Humanitarian Assistance and the Politics of Self reliance written by Suzan Ilcan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Increasingly, refugees residing in refugee camps are living in protracted situations for which there are no quick remedies. Existing attempts to address protracted situations for refugees engage with the concept and practices of the Self-reliance Strategy (SRS). This paper focuses on the SRS in Uganda's Nakivale Refugee Settlement. It draws attention to the strategy's disconnection from the social and economic relations within which refugees live in settlements, and its inability to provide refugees with sufficient access to social support and protection." --

Book Refugees Self Reliance Development

Download or read book Refugees Self Reliance Development written by Easton-Calabria, Evan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evan Easton-Calabria’s critical history of refugee self-reliance assistance brings new dimensions to refugee and international development studies. The promotion of refugee self-reliance is evident today, yet its history remains largely unexplored, with good practices and longstanding issues often missed. Through archival and contemporary evidence, this book documents a century of little-known efforts to foster refugee self-reliance, including the economic, political, and social motives driving this assistance. With five case studies from Greece, Tanzania, Pakistan, Uganda, and Egypt, the book tracks refugee self-reliance as a malleable concept used to pursue ulterior interests. It reshapes understandings of refugee self-reliance and delivers important messages for contemporary policy making. The first chapter is available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence.

Book Refugee Housing in Support of Self reliance

Download or read book Refugee Housing in Support of Self reliance written by Hannah Nicole Bidigare-Curtis and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explored associations between refugee housing characteristics and desired refugee outcomes - namely health & well-being and self-reliance - and examined plausible mediating mechanisms that may explain the associations between these variables. It is one of the first studies to directly examine the relationship between refugee housing and refugees' ability to be self-reliant, in alignment with Housing First models. A sample of 82 participants was randomly selected in three zones of Bidibidi Refugee Settlement in Uganda, where residents are largely responsible for constructing and maintaining their own earthen housing. These housing structures and layouts were described, and a matrix of bi-variate correlations was examined. A series of significantly correlated variables was tested for mediation based on the hypotheses, and this mediation model was then tested for moderation by demographic variables (zone, sex, marital status, hut tenure, and age). Results identified several statistically significant housing variables relevant to self-reliance and health & well-being. Presence of pests within households was associated with resource access, and sleep quality served as a significant mediator in this model. No demographic variables served as significant moderators for the pests-sleep quality-resource access mediation model. Ultimately, these findings help identify specific future points of intervention for settlement housing, thereby informing projects, policies, and the design of refugee settlements going forward.

Book excerpt: The first in-depth exploration of the persistence and pervasiveness of a dangerous legal fiction about people who cross borders: the binary distinction between migrant and refugee. Today, the concept of "the refugee" as distinct from other migrants looms large. Immigration laws have developed to reinforce a conceptual dichotomy between those viewed as voluntary, often economically motivated, migrants who can be legitimately excluded by potential host states, and those viewed as forced, often politically motivated, refugees who should be let in. In Crossing, Rebecca Hamlin argues against advocacy positions that cling to this distinction. Everything we know about people who decide to move suggests that border crossing is far more complicated than any binary, or even a continuum, can encompass. The decision to leave home is almost always multi-causal and often involves many stops and hazards along the way--a reality not captured by a system that categorizes a majority of border-crossers as undeserving, and the rare few as vulnerable and needy. Drawing on cases of various "border crises" across Europe, North America, South America, and the Middle East, Hamlin outlines major inconsistencies and faulty assumptions upon which the binary relies, and explains its endurance and appeal by tracing its origins to the birth of the modern state and the rise of colonial empire. The migrant/refugee binary is not just an innocuous shorthand, indeed its power stems from the way in which is it painted as objective, neutral, and apolitical. In truth, the binary is a dangerous legal fiction, politically constructed with the ultimate goal of making harsh border control measures more ethically palatable to the public. This book is a challenge to all those invested in the rights and study of migrants, to interrogate their own assumptions and move towards more equitable advocacy for all border crossers.

Book Refugee Women and Economic Self reliance

Download or read book Refugee Women and Economic Self reliance written by S. Forbes Martin and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article examines the lessons to be derived from programmes implemented in refugee situations to help women attain greater economic self-reliance. It begins by setting the overall context for these programmes: the objective, not always realized, of moving from a relief orientation in refugee programmes towards a development approach. Various impediments to accomplishing the development goals of refugee assistance are presented. The article then describes the various economic activities in which women engage in refugee settings. The economic activities of refugee households are discussed in several categories: employment in local economy or with assistance agencies; agricultural activities; market activities; trades and small businesses. The article then critiques income-generating projects for refugee women using several concrete examples to show the lack of effective refugee participation. Various economic and legal restraints are examined that inhibit self-reliance projects. The article continues with a discussion of the relationships that need to be established between relief and development organizations to promote greater self-reliance for refugee women. Special mention is made of the working relationship being established between the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM). The article concludes with recommendations for future efforts to enhance the self-reliance of refugee women.

By unraveling the complexities of social, material and institutional interdependencies, the author invites us to rethink conventional notions of dependence and vulnerability. Exploring issues of personhood as they relate to the exchange of material goods and care, the book offers a thought-provoking perspective on the seemingly promising shift towards a rights-based approach. A compelling read for anyone seeking to reshape the humanitarian agenda.
