Book excerpt: There are no protocols in the literature describing how spiritual care from nursing staff should be provided to a bone marrow transplant patient and their family. Although a majority of nurses think that routine spiritual care would positively impact patients, only 25% of patients have reported receiving spiritual care. Increased education has been associated with positive perceptions of spiritual care. The solution to this need will be researched through a secondary data analysis from pre/post surveys from implementation of an education program on spiritual care for BMT nurses. The hypothesis of this PI is that a spiritual education program will enhance spiritual perspectives in nurses and increase spiritually-focused nursing care with patients. The purpose of this PI is to determine if a spirituality training class for Bone Marrow Transplant nurses will increase nurses' spiritual perspectives and their spiritual care of patients. A second purpose is to examine the relationship between nurses' spiritual perspectives and extent of spiritual care at both pre- and post- educational program times. This study is a secondary analysis of a data set from a pre/post survey of BMT nurses who attended a spiritual education program. Nurses were surveyed using the SPS tool and a NSQ tool. The spiritual education program was a one day, six hour class that was taught by the research team, and divided into sessions. There were 43 BMT nurses who completed the class and the posttest one month after taking the class. The slight increase of scores from pre- to post- survey with the SPS suggests that the spiritual education program provided a slight enhancement of personal spiritual perspectives and assisted the participants to reflect and further develop their values and beliefs on spirituality. The hypothesis that a spiritual education program would increase the frequency of spiritual care that nurses provided to patients was strongly supported. These findings suggest that participating in a spiritual education program provides the nurse with information that will enable one to conduct spiritual assessments, become more comfortable developing an individualized patient spiritual care plan, and accepting that providing spiritual care is part of a nurse's job description.

Despite the acknowledgement of spiritual care as a requisite of quality nursing practice, it is rarely incorporated into patient care and nurses feel uncomfortable and unprepared to provide it. Purpose: Determine how implementation of a spiritual care education session and standardized spiritual care discussion guides in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) affects nurses' behaviors and attitudes towards providing spiritual patient support. Methods: A pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design was used to guide this pilot study. A convenience sample of 12 nurses participated in the study. All received a 20-minute spiritual care education session, and were given a printed spiritual care pocket-guide resource, and spiritual care discussion guides meant to structure the nurses' assessment of patients' spiritual needs for routine and end-of-life circumstances. Demographic information, and spiritual practice data was obtained using the Spiritual Care Practice Questionnaire before and after exposure to the intervention. Statistical analysis using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and McNemar test determined that nurses reported more frequently providing therapeutic communication to help patients reflect on their spirituality, making arrangements for patients to participate in spiritual practices, and personally participating in practices to enhance their spirituality after the intervention (p

Book excerpt: The goal of nursing is towards holistic care, yet the articulation on spiritual care is still a vague concept. According to nursing literatures, care for patients' spiritual needs and/or problems is an aspect of nurses' patient care. Acquiring the relevant competencies to provide spiritual care is indicated as an essential professional skill. Measuring these competencies and their development is therefore important. This descriptive correlational study aims to explore spiritual care by assessing the perceived level of competence of oncology nurses in selected tertiary level hospitals in Metro Manila. A spiritual care comptency scale questtionaire with established validty and reliabilty was used to measure the oncology nurses' perceived level of competencies. Purposive sampling was usede and yields a total of sixty oncology nurses' and sixty confined oncology patients from eight tertiary level hospitals. Results showed a socio-demographic profile of oncology nurses with 45% belonging to the age bracket of 31-40, with 21 years old as minimum age and 50 as the maximum age. The respondent patient's age profile revealed the highest percentage belonging to age group of 51- 60. The minimum age is 18 and thwe maximum age is 85. Based on the six dimensions of spiritual care: attitude towards patients spirituality, communication, referral, assessment of spiritual needs, implentation of spiritual care, professionalization and improvement of spiritual care, the oncology nurses' perceived level of competency was measured by computing the general weighted mean, spearman's rho and t-test. Results showed theat the spiritual care competencies of oncolgy nurses are still less developed as perceived by patients and nurse themselves.
