Book EFL Learner Autonomy and Unfamiliar Vocabulary Learning

Download or read book EFL Learner Autonomy and Unfamiliar Vocabulary Learning written by Kyoko Ogawa and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of learner autonomy is one of the major theoretical constructs studied in L2 learning. Drawing on Deci and Ryan's (1985) Self-Determination Theory (SDT), I sought to investigate and describe L2 learner autonomy and how an educational intervention influences it. The SDT conceptualizing human motivation for learning as existing on a continuum from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation provides ways of measuring learner autonomy and a rationale for educational interventions for developing it. First, Japanese adult EFL learners' characteristics were described in terms of learner autonomy-related psychological constructs (motivation, affect, and strategy use) according to levels of learner autonomy based on SDT. Second, the adapted VSS yielded significant effects on the participants' vocabulary learning and L2 learning anxiety (for the high and low autonomous motivation groups) and social strategy use (for the low autonomous motivation group). Third, the implementation of the adapted VSS into the adult L2 English classes was considered in terms of the development of linguistic and autonomous forms of learning quoting from the participants' quantitative and qualitative responses for this approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocabulary learning strategies refer to the intentional behavior and thoughts that learners make use of during learning in order to better help them understand, learn or remember the target language vocabulary. Vocabulary learning strategies are important for teachers, students and researchers since they work to achieve high-quality learning outcomes. This study was an attempt to investigate the overall pattern of English vocabulary learning strategies used by some Chinese college non-English majors and to explore the relationship between the vocabulary learning strategies they employed and the achievement they made in reading comprehension. A questionnaire, based on Gu and Johnson's (1996), was administered to a sample of 141 college students from three universities. Statistical description, independent sample test and correlation analysis among vocabulary learning strategies and reading comprehension scores were analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science).

Book Approaches to Enhancing Vocabulary Learning in an EFL Context microform a Comparative Study

Download or read book Approaches to Enhancing Vocabulary Learning in an EFL Context microform a Comparative Study written by Yan Wang and published by Library and Archives Canada = Bibliothèque et Archives Canada. This book was released on 2005 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-test and post-tests of the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale were administrated and a repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to identify any significant difference among the three groups at each test administration. The results indicated that all three approaches resulted in significant vocabulary gains, but focused vocabulary learning before reading led to greater gains, both in terms of the number of words acquired and in the depth of word knowledge acquired. The results were interpreted in relation to learning attention/consciousness, learning style, and culture context. In the field of second language vocabulary acquisition, there are still no definite answers about how vocabulary can best be learned or taught. This study aimed to investigate this question with 99 Chinese university EFL learners. In particular, three approaches were examined: (a) incidental vocabulary learning from reading (no instruction), (b) focused vocabulary learning before reading (students learning vocabulary themselves from word lists), (c) vocabulary instruction after reading.

Book Enhancing Academic Vocabulary Learning in English Language Learners

Download or read book Enhancing Academic Vocabulary Learning in English Language Learners written by Katharine L. Roling and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School systems in the United States are contending with diverse student populations that may require new approaches to teaching. A large proportion of this diversity stems from language differences, and schools are increasingly encountering a number of students who do not speak English as their first language (English language learners, or ELLs). These students are often behind their English-speaking peers in size of vocabulary. More importantly, these students often struggle to develop academic vocabulary, or an understanding of the words used to communicate academic content. Vocabulary has been found to be implicated in reading fluency and comprehension, and thus is strongly related to school achievement. Because cognitive psychology has provided insight into the benefits of retrieval practice and deep processing through elaboration for strengthening learning and memory, researchers have hypothesized that these principles can be applied in educational settings to enhance learning in school-age children. The current study investigates whether incorporating such cognitive principles into supplemental instruction is an effective means of increasing the academic vocabulary and reading proficiency of ELLs. An incremental rehearsal intervention method was examined using single-case methodology. Results revealed promising positive effects of the intervention on academic vocabulary knowledge, but provided less support for the extension of these effects to improvement of reading fluency and comprehension.
