Book Engravings on Wood Classic Reprint

Download or read book Engravings on Wood Classic Reprint written by Society of American Wood Engravers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engravings on Wood Artists, too, manifested only a limited interest in drawing on the block. The obliteration of their work by the process of engraving it was alone an insurmountable barrier to progress in black and white drawing. The introduction of photography upon wood made it practicable to transfer to the block a drawing in black and white, a water color, or an oil painting. The result was that the reproduction of works of a very much higher class was begun, and a much greater degree of intimacy was established between the work of the engraver and the work of the artist. Nothing could be more natural than that in these circumstances the engravers should rapidly invade new fields and carry their artistic sympathies and instincts to the point of themselves becoming artists. Book excerpt: A History of Wood-Engraving By George Edward Woodberry Woodberry was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on May 12, 1855. The Woodberrys or Woodburys-various spellings of the name exist-immigrated early and, since settlement took root on the North Shore, have been native to Beverly and neighboring seaport towns. Receiving his preparation at the Phillips Exeter Academy, he entered Harvard College in 1872. Owing, however, to ill health, he was unable to continue with his class. He re-entered in 1875 and was graduated in 1877. Another distinguished member was the then Governor of Massachusetts. Woodberry took highest final honors in philosophy, and was awarded an Oration at Commencement. This essay, on the "Relation of Pallas Athene to Athens," owes its preservation in a permanent form to the fact that he was forbidden to deliver it, because of the disapproval of its substance by the Committee of the Faculty in charge. His college friends asked his consent to print for him a small edition, copies of which are now rare. This and his early college poems, of which there is a selection in ''Verses from the Harvard Advocate'' (1876), were his first-fruits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Wood-Engraving N this book I have attempted to gather and arrange such facts as should be known to men of cultivation interested in the art of engraving in wood. I have, therefore, disregard ed such matter as seems to belong rather to descriptive bib liography, and have treated wood-engraving, in its principal works, as a re ection of the life of men and an illustration of successive phases of civilization. Where there is much disputed ground, particularly in the early history of the art, the Writers on whom I have relied are referred to, and those who adopt a different view are named; but where the facts seemed plain, and are easily verifiable, reference did not ap pear necessary. Good cuts and bad have been confounded together: and exact reproductions made from foul impressions, the ink over the sides of the lines too often supposed to be a portion of the engraving. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Wood Engravings: Historical and Practical Tuouon several English authors have, in modern times, written on the origin and early history of wood engraving, yet no one has hitherto given, in a distinct work, a connected account of its progress from the earliest period to the present time; and no one, however confidently he may have expressed his opinion on the subject, appears to have thought it necessary to make him self acquainted with the practice of the art. The antiquity and early history of wood engraving appear to have been considered as themes which allowed of great scope for speculation, and required no practical knowledge of the art. It is from this cause that we find so many erroneous statements in almost every modern dissertation on wood engraving. Had the writers ever thought of appealing to a person practically acquainted with the art, whose early productions they professed to give some account of, their conjectures might, in many instances, have been spared; and had they, in matters requiring research, taken the pains to ex amine and judge for themselves, instead of adopting the opinions of others, they would have discovered that a considerable por tion of what they thus took on trust, was not in accordance with facts. As the antiquity and early history of wood engraving form a considerable portion of two expensive works which profess to give some account of the art, it has been thought that such a work as the present, combining the history with the practice of the art, and with numerous cuts illustrative of its progress, decline, and revival, might not be unfavourably received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Newark: A Series of Engravings on Wood Mr. Eaton tells us that he gives us in this book the results of his study of Newark's pictorial manifestations; and that he was able to bring to that study a certain freshness of vision because, knowing nothing of that city, he saw it precisely as it is, without the glamour, the apology, or the explanation which social, historical, or sentimental associations would give to it. It was precisely because Mr. Eaton could thus write of the Newark of to-day unhampered by knowledge oi its story and by feeling for its peculiar quality, that the Carteret Club asked him to prepare for it a presentment of Newark in words to accompany Mr. Ruzicka's presentment in line and color. This mental and emotional detachment was not the sole reason, however, for the selection of Mr. Eaton. He had already prepared a text to accompany a series of engravings of New York city which Mr. Ruzicka had executed for the Grolier Club, and therein made it plain, as he had on many other occasions, that he sees the world, much as does the artist, in a series of pictures, and that the pictures which lie sees he can set forth in words clearly and truly and with just that touch which makes of the result, though lull of hints at poetic images and of pictorial suggestions, a clear straightforward prose. That is to say, the Club had asked Mr. Ruzicka to visit Newark and reproduce in a group of engravings such aspects of the city as appealed to him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from One Hundred Book Plates: Engraved on Wood The character of the Wood Block is distinctly appropriate to the treatment of what may be termed the masculine school of heraldic drawing, and which is exceedingly refreshing when one is tired of the finicky and laboured work of the conventional coach-painter school of heraldic draughtsmanship. The nature of the designs need not be confined to heraldry, and, as will be seen from many examples in the following pages, considerable success can be obtained in the treatment of monograms and other personal emblems, and where expense is an item and simplicity a necessity, the adoption of the Wood Block can be strongly recommended. To those whose tastes lead them to admire the more finiz'.ed and delicate treatment of the Copper Plate, the Wood Block with its heavy lines and bold effect does not appeal, and of course there is a great deal to say for the more refined treatment which was dealt with more fully in the companion volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Emblems: Being a Series of Engravings on Wood We cannot conclude this rapid sketch of the history of wood engraving without observing, that this long-neglected art has lately excited the attention of Mr. West, Mr. Flaxman, and Mr. Stothard and from the love which these gentlemen are known to possess for every thing genuine or elevated, we may expect to see it, by their exertions, revived in all its former splendour, and restored to its ancient and legitimate rank. It will be observed, and possibly with some surprise, that in the foregoing account we have not hinted at the probability of any other material than wood having been used in the production of the engravings which have passed under our notice; we are not, however, ignorant that a doubt has arisen in the minds of some antiquaries upon this subject. Mr. Landseer, in the lectures which he delivered with so much eclat at the Royal Institution, gave it as his opinion, that type metal was formerly used instead of wood; that the lights were possibly corroded away, or that the tablet was cast from a prototype, or matrix, previously cut in intaglio. This opinion is grounded, first, on the freedom and frequency of the cross-hatchings, which distinguish the works of the old masters from modern wood engraving; and, secondly, on the circumstance of none of the old wooden blocks being now discoverable, notwithstanding the most diligent enquiry'. But with all our respect for the opinions of the ingenious lecturer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
