Book excerpt: "A treasure of a book."—David McCullough The harrowing story of a pathbreaking naval expedition that set out to map the entire Pacific Ocean, dwarfing Lewis and Clark with its discoveries, from the New York Times bestselling author of Valiant Ambition and In the Hurricane's Eye. A New York Times Notable Book America's first frontier was not the West; it was the sea, and no one writes more eloquently about that watery wilderness than Nathaniel Philbrick. In his bestselling In the Heart of the Sea Philbrick probed the nightmarish dangers of the vast Pacific. Now, in an epic sea adventure, he writes about one of the most ambitious voyages of discovery the Western world has ever seen—the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838–1842. On a scale that dwarfed the journey of Lewis and Clark, six magnificent sailing vessels and a crew of hundreds set out to map the entire Pacific Ocean and ended up naming the newly discovered continent of Antarctica, collecting what would become the basis of the Smithsonian Institution. Combining spellbinding human drama and meticulous research, Philbrick reconstructs the dark saga of the voyage to show why, instead of being celebrated and revered as that of Lewis and Clark, it has—until now—been relegated to a footnote in the national memory. Winner of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize

Book excerpt: The acclaimed author of Conquistador and Labyrinth of Ice charts one of history’s greatest expeditions, a legendary 16th-century adventurer’s death-defying navigation of the Amazon River. In 1541, Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Pizarro and his lieutenant Francisco Orellana searched for La Canela, South America’s rumored Land of Cinnamon, and the fabled El Dorado, “the golden man.” Quickly, the enormous expedition of mercenaries, enslaved natives, horses, and hunting dogs were decimated through disease, starvation, and attacks in the jungle. Hopelessly lost in the swampy labyrinth, Pizarro and Orellana made the fateful decision to separate. While Pizarro eventually returned home in rags, Orellana and fifty-seven men continued into the unknown reaches of the mighty Amazon jungle and river. Theirs would be the greater glory. Interweaving historical accounts with newly uncovered details, Levy reconstructs Orellana’s journey as the first European to navigate the world’s largest river. Every twist and turn of the powerful Amazon holds new wonders and the risk of death. Levy gives a long-overdue account of the Amazon’s people—some offering sustenance and guidance, others hostile, subjecting the invaders to gauntlets of unremitting attacks and signs of terrifying rituals. Violent and beautiful, noble and tragic, River of Darkness is riveting history and breathtaking adventure that will sweep readers on a voyage unlike any other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance diplomat and part-time spy, William Hakluyt was also England's first serious geographer, gathering together a wealth of accounts about the wide-ranging travels and discoveries of the sixteenth-century English. One of the epics of this great period of expansion, The Principal Navigations, Voyages, Traffiques and Discoveries of the English Nation describes, in the words of the explorers themselves, an astonishing era in which the English grew rapidly aware of the sheer size and strangeness of their world. Mingling accounts of the journeys of renowned adventurers such as Drake and Frobisher with descriptions by other explorers and traders to reveal a nation beginning to dominate the seas, Hakluyt's great work was originally intended principally to assist navigation and trade. It also presents one of the first and greatest modern portraits of the globe.

This book was released on 2010-03-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. Volume 7 (1849) is an edition of accounts of exploration in the New World and in the Caribbean islands originally published by Richard Hakluyt in 1582. Hakluyt himself was a priest who acted as chaplain to Sir Robert Cecil, the Secretary of State to Elizabeth I and James I. He was a self-taught geographer and an enthusiastic supporter of colonial ventures in the New World, believing that England should not be left behind France and Spain in the rush to claim new territories.

Book The Cabot Voyages and Bristol Discovery under Henry VII

Download or read book The Cabot Voyages and Bristol Discovery under Henry VII written by R.A. Skelton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The voyages of John and Sebastian Cabot and their English contemporaries were made, for the most part, in search of a westward passage to Asia, and they resulted in the revelation of North America. The evidences are printed here, with an indication of their origins. Some are obscure in meaning, incomplete in statement, or mutually contradictory; and we are left with the certainty that important documents have existed or may now exist, which are still unknown. Dr Williamson interprets the evidence we have. Parts of his undertaking are in the nature of detective work and he does not claim that his solutions are final, which would be impossible in the face of new evidence that may at any time occur. Cabot study is a continuing mental adventure. The maps are an important category of the evidence. Mr R.A. Skelton of the British Museum has contributed a treatment of them, authoritative in its explanations, and a valuable admonition on what can and cannot be expected of the material. This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1962.
