Book Delight in One Thousand Characters

Download or read book Delight in One Thousand Characters written by and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully curated presentation of the Thousand Character Essay, a masterpiece of Chinese calligraphy that has served as the art form's classic manual for over 1,400 years. Sung to infants as a lullaby, used to teach reading and writing, and employed as library index codes, the Thousand Character Essay is China's most widely used and beloved calligraphy textbook. Composed by the literary giant Zhou Xingsi and handwritten by sixth-century Buddhist monk Zhiyong, this masterful work has endured for centuries as the standard guide for brush writing both in formal and cursive scripts. Delight in One Thousand Characters brings this sublime body of art-as-text to English-speaking readers through its translation and explanation by calligraphers and artists Kazuaki Tanahashi and Susan O'Leary. Preserving the renowned beauty of monk Zhiyong's only extant handwriting, the book visually depicts the traditional script through extensive imagery, including a full, one-hundred-strip edition of Zhiyong's calligraphy. All images also have corresponding commentary explaining the meaning of each character. Essays and appendices by Tanahashi and O'Leary detail the fascinating history, geographic range, and aesthetic nuance of the essay and of Zhiyong's rendering--essential material to be familiar with the history, thought, literature, and art of East Asian civilization. For calligraphers, Delight in One Thousand Characters can serve as an advanced primer for practicing both formal and cursive Chinese calligraphy.

Book Words and Images

Download or read book Words and Images written by Alfreda Murck and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1991 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May of 1985, an international symposium was held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in honor of John M. Crawford, Jr., whose gifts of Chinese calligraphy and painting have constituted a significant addition to the Museum's holdings. Over a three-day period, senior scholars from China, Japan, Taiwan, Europe, and the United States expressed a wide range of perspectives on an issue central to the history of Chinese visual aesthetics: the relationships between poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The practice of integrating the three art forms-known as san-chiieh, or the three perfections-in one work of art emerged during the Sung and Yuan dynasties largely in the context of literati culture, and it has stimulated lively critical discussion ever since. This publication contains twenty-three essays based on the papers presented at the Crawford symposium. Grouped by subject matter in a roughly chronological order, these essays reflect research on topics spanning two millennia of Chinese history. The result is an interdisciplinary exploration of the complex set of relationships between words and images by art historians, literary historians, and scholars of calligraphy. Their findings provide us with a new level of understanding of this rich and complicated subject and suggest further directions for the study of Chinese art history. The essays are accompanied by 255 illustrations, some of which reproduce works rarely published. Chinese characters have been provided throughout the text for artists names, terms, titles of works of art and literature, and important historical figures, as well as for excerpts of selected poetry and prose. A chronology, also containing Chinese characters, and an extensive index contribute to making this book illuminating and invaluable to both the specialist and the layman.

Book excerpt: Based on the author's experiences and materials used in teaching Chinese calligraphy for over a decade at elite universities in the United States, this text features the basic brush techniques and selected masterpieces from the history of Chinese calligraphy and is useful for beginners to learn and practice with or without an instructor. The ten chapters cover the intellectual features of Chinese calligraphy, the basic techniques starting from how to hold a brush, the basic rules/methods of Chinese calligraphy, and a systematic survey of the major scripts from oracle bone inscription to the standard script, following a chronological order. "Hiding the Tip" is the basic brush technique used by calligraphy beginners. As a gateway to Chinese calligraphy, this book introduces this basic technique in the context of traditional Chinese culture and, in particular, in the context of the argument that Chinese calligraphy is a cosmology. As an expert on ancient Chinese calligraphy and manuscripts, the author selectively includes recently discovered excavated manuscripts of Chinese calligraphy. Thus, instead of conventional rubbings, illustrated here are ancient examples of Chinese calligraphy--original ink masterpieces that have never been available in previous works on calligraphy.
