Book English Sport Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Sport Classic Reprint written by Alfred Edward Thomas Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Sport With a view to subsequent appearance in book form I lately published in the Badminton Magazine, under the general title Masters of Their Arts, a series of papers intended to place on record the manner in which the chief English sports and pastimes were conducted and practised at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Masters of Their Arts seemed appropriate, for the reason that those from whom I sought contributions might be fittingly so described. I drew out a list of the authorities whom I considered best able to supply what I wanted, and was extremely fortunate in obtaining a favourable answer to my requests in every case. Perhaps it would be presumptuous on my part to say that I do not see how the list could well have been strengthened; that, however, is a matter I leave with no little confidence to the judgment of readers. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Sports of England This is the first step to history; for what is history but the account of what people said and did long ago, related by them to their children, and by them told again to others? Inquiries into the customs of our ancestors, which, from length of time, have become obscure, constitute a portion of the amusement and occupation of the antiquary. It was to the ardour with which he followed these researches, to his accurate' memory, and to the keen judgment which he exercised about them, joined to the delightful manner in which he imparted his knowledge to others, that Sir Walter Scott owed his great cele brity as the poet and historian of chivalry, the chronicler of ancient manners, and the devoted lover of brown heath and shaggy wood. You have all, perhaps, read some Of his works, and 1 am sure they must have charmed you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Sports and Pastimes 1868 Considered that it is too delicate, too pretty, too refined to be dealt with by men who profess that, in speaking Of British Sports, they have intended to speak of things rough and violent. Tennis is not now widely known, but that, and Rackets, - which we regard as perhaps the most perfect game that was ever invented, - are Games rather than Sports, and can hardly be brought within our limits. There remains that wide word Athletics. Racing, Jumping, Ball-throwing and Hammer-throw ing, and the like, have undoubtedly pushed them selves into such prominent notice in late years as to give them almost a claim to be reckoned among British Sports; but we have felt that they have fallen some what short of the necessary dignity, and have excluded them, - not altogether with a clear conscience. An editor is, at the best, but the mouthpiece of the author, and if I have failed to do justice to the ms. Placed in my hands I must excuse myself on the ground of being rather soldier and sportsman than scribe. I gladly take the opportunity thus afforded me of tendering my sincere thanks to Mr. F. H. Salvin, the author of Falconry in the British Isles, ' for the very material assistance he has given me in the compilation of Part V. He has also very kindly lent some of the plates from that valuable work. My thanks are also due to Mr. Hutchinson for kindly overlooking the portion on Golf.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sports Extra: Classics of Sports Reporting Not all the selections belong in the realm of pure literature. The boys had no time to compose a piece for the ages: it is, indeed, a wonder that the syntax IS relatively unscrambled and the English is reasonably good. The majority of these stories was written in a huge, outdoor psychopathic ward with anywhere from 30 to inmates screaming insanely and the copy desk demanding a lead for the next edition, and damn' quick, too. Much of the copy was fed in short takes, or paragraphs, to telegraph instruments clattering insistently and it was written in the white heat of excitement on eighteen crowded, precarious inches of wooden benches and tables under frightful conditions - ram, cold, heat and the critical attention of insects that fly or crawl or have the power of speech. Book A Social History of English Cricket

Download or read book A Social History of English Cricket written by Derek Birley and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acclaimed as a magisterial, classic work, A Social History of English Cricket is an encyclopaedic survey of the game, from its humble origins all the way to modern floodlit finishes. But it is also the story of English culture, mirrored in a sport that has always been a complex repository of our manners, hierarchies and politics. Derek Birley’s survey of the impact on cricket of two world wars, Empire and ‘the English caste system’, will, contends Ian Wooldridge, ‘teach an intelligent child of twelve more about their heritage than he or she will ever pick up at school.’ In just under 400 pages Birley takes us through a rich historical tapestry: how the game was snatched from rustic obscurity by gentlemanly gamblers; became the height of late eighteenth century metropolitan fashion; was turned into both symbol and synonym for British imperialism; and its more recent struggle to dislodge the discomforting social values preserved in the game from its imperial heyday. Superbly witty and humorous, peopled by larger-than-life characters from Denis Compton to Ian Botham, and wholly forswearing nostalgia, A Social History of English Cricket is a tour-de-force by one of the great writers on cricket.
