Book English Spelling and Spelling Reform Classic Reprint

Download or read book English Spelling and Spelling Reform Classic Reprint written by Thomas R. Lounsbury and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Spelling and Spelling Reform The main ideas underlying the treatment here found of English orthography were embodied in an article which appeared in the Atlantic Monthly for June, 1907. The title it there bore was "Confessions of a Spelling Reformer." This it was the original intention to give to the present work. But with the changes which were required in recasting the article upon which it was based, with the great expansion of many of the points considered in it, more than all with the extension of its scope so as to include many new topics, the personal element which had characterized it none too prominently in the first place sank into almost complete insignificance. Hence followed the inappropriateness of the title. Here, accordingly, it has been confined to the opening chapter, and for it has been substituted that which the volume now bears. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Spelling Reform I Suppose I may assume that the British Academy will at all times be ready to consider questions that relate to general education; and I am personally of opinion that there are few subjects of general interest and importance that are more deserving of attention than the often debated one of Phonetic Spelling. I do not propose to waste the time of those who are so kind as to listen to me, by stating or recommending any views that I have formed for myself, during the many years in which this subject has never been far from my thoughts; my object is rather to review the present state of the question, and to consider what progress, if any, has been made in the direction of its solution. Notwithstanding all that has been said and written upon the subject during the past forty years, I fear it must be admitted that we are still in very much the same position as we were at the beginning of the discussion; at any rate, as far as relates to the attainment of any practical results in this country. But as regards the theory of it, something has been achieved. The labors of Dr. Ellis and Dr. Sweet have by no means been lost; and, in order to see what advances have been made, a slight sketch of the history of the movement may prove useful. When it was first proposed to improve our modern system of spelling, it soon dawned upon all serious enquirers that the first step was to examine the meaning of the symbols which we employ for the purpose of representing the spoken language. There was a difficulty at the very outset; for the first impression which the very look of the written language is apt to produce - the impression, indeed, which it actually produces upon the minds of a vast multitude amongst us - is that the whole matter is inexplicable, and is not likely to be capable of explanation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Spelling Reform In all these cases any attempt to conform the spelling to the established pronunciation of these words would not only be impractical, but would nul lify the effect for which the suffixes have been created. Invariability of form and of the suggested meaning teaches the mind to neglect the sound and depend upon visual impression alone for the thought. This has created a definite consciousness of the meanings of visible word elements, and the mere general form of the suffix is sufficient to indicate to the reader the particular sense conveyed by the word. This is one of the most extraordinary phases of the developments of modern English. The classification, in lists, of suffixes and prefixes in the schoolbooks for the teach ing of language has become nearly universal, and the child is taught that a certain group of letters occurring in a word indicates a certain idea or group of ideas. The consciousness of this may become so definite that we write of isms, doxies, ologies, and anas. But it is not alone suflfxes and prefixes that vary in pronunciation while the form and sense remain the same. Whole compound words so vary. Thus, in the word geography the o in the accented syllable is distinctly o as in not; but in the derivative geog graphical, the 0 assumes a new value. Yet the consciousness of this alteration is entirely absent in reading; and any calling of the attention to it would undoubtedly interfere with the intelligibility of the word as a symbol of an idea. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Language: A Journal of Spelling Reform and Other Language Topics; April, 1891, to March, 1894 It must not be forgotten that Latin under lies the whole fabric of English literature and the whole structure of English thought, inso much that its abandonment az a means of mental training would produce a breach of continuity, so to speak, between the past and the future of learning, and would effectually detach coming generations from the wisdom of our ancestors.' Book The Simplification of English Spelling

Download or read book The Simplification of English Spelling written by George Harley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Simplification of English Spelling: Specially Adapted for the Rising Generation, an Easy Way of Saving Time in Writing, Printing, and Reading Men of middle age shrink from the idea of having to begin and learn another, and more complex, form of alphabet. They tremble at the very thought of having to commence a course of spelling anew. They even, to a certain extent, dread the prospect of having their visual organs offended by the abnormal appearance which a new form of words is likely to present. These objections, though they may appear trifling when looked at individually, will nevertheless, We fear, be ascertained to be formidable obstructive agents in the way of orthographical reform when they exert their influence collectively. Let them be eradicated from the public mind, and the path to Spelling Reform would at once be open. Now comes the question, - How is this desirable object to be attained? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Spelling Reform We may further note here that in many other positions where the conventional long sounds of the vowels are supposed to be regularly used we frequently find the short ones. Thus, if we have change and range, we have also flange paste and waste have caste for an ill-assorted fellow bind and pint must keep company with wind and mint; toll and droll with doll; while torn, port, and most are readily confronted with corn, short, and cost. Thus no certain means are provided in thousands of cases to mark whether a vowel-sign represents the conventional long or the short sound, quite different in nature as those sounds are, and the spelling-books only partially surmount the difficulty by adopting a plan of syllabication which is often in conflict with etymology and phonetics. Book The History of English Spelling

Download or read book The History of English Spelling written by Christopher Upward and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of English Spelling “Fifty years ago, G. H. Vallins contributed a book on spelling to the Language Library. Since then, there have been several major surveys, and new opportunities to explore the history of English words. The time is therefore ripe for a fresh presentation, and this is what George Davidson has done, building on the huge collection of historical data amassed by Christopher Upward, and giving it narrative shape. I have been waiting for a source-book like this for a long time, and I’m delighted that it has found a place in this series.” David Crystal, Language Library series editor Few languages are riddled with as many spelling inconsistencies and irregularities as English. Why is there such dissonance between the sounds of English and the spelling used to represent them? The answer lies in the history of the language itself. The History of English Spelling reveals the rich and complex history of Modern English spelling, tracing its origins and development from Old English up to the present day. The book provides a highly detailed, letter-by-letter analysis of the Old English basis of Modern English spelling, followed by in-depth coverage of the contributions from French, Latin, Greek and the many other languages that have contributed to current orthography. Upward and Davidson also explore events in the socio-political history of England as the setting for developments in spelling, along with the works of a number of lexicographers (especially Johnson and Webster), and various proposals for spelling reform. The History of English Spelling reveals the richness of the complex and often frustrating alphabetic spelling system used in the English language.
