Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vinogradoff, Sir Paul. English Society in the Eleventh Century: Essays in English Mediaeval History. Oxford: At the Clarendon Press, 1908. xii, 599 pp. Reprint available February, 2005 by the Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-476-2. Cloth. $95. * One of the principal studies by the eminent legal scholar, it is commended by Holdsworth in The Historians of English Law as "a most valuable historical analysis of the forces which were creating mediaeval society in England" (86-87). Vinogradoff [1854-1925] considers the Old English, Danish and Norman elements that shaped English society during one of its most dynamic phases. Careful attention is paid to the influence of political factors and public law on social life and how innovations in husbandry and other economic factors influenced the development of private law.

Download or read book English Society in the Eleventh Century written by Paul Vinogradoff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Society in the Eleventh Century: Essays in English Mediaeval History One great question I have thought best to leave aside namely, the rise of English town life. The authorities of the eleventh century, and especially Domesday Book, supply us with capital evidence on this point, but the trend of such an inquiry leads to intricate problems which seem to require a separate and exhaustive treatment. I thought it sufficient for the day to discuss the principal types of development in country life to which the greater part of the Survey and Of other eleventh-century documents are devoted. Book Women in Medieval English Society

Download or read book Women in Medieval English Society written by Mavis E. Mate and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-08-19 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written primarily for undergraduates, this book weighs the evidence for and against the various theories relating to the position of women at different time periods. Professor Mate examines the major issues deciding the position of women in medieval English society, asking questions such as, did women enjoy a rough equality in the Anglo-Saxon period that they subsequently lost? Did queens at certain periods exercise real political clout or was their power limited to questions of patronage? Did women's participation in the economy grant them considerable independence and allow them to postpone or delay marriage? Professor Mate also demonstrates that class, as well as gender, was very important in determining age at marriage and opportunities for power and influence. Although some women at certain times did make short-term gains, Professor Mate challenges the dominant view that major transformations in women's position occurred in the century after the Black Death.

Book The Commercialisation of English Society 1000 1500

Download or read book The Commercialisation of English Society 1000 1500 written by R. H. Britnell and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commercialisation of English society offers a major new interpretation of social and economic change in England over five centuries. By 1500 English livelihoods depended more upon money and commercial transactions than ever before; the institutional framework of markets had been transformed, and urban development was more pronounced. These changes were not, however, caused by any unilinear development of population, output or money supply. This pioneering study examines both institutional and economic transformation, and the social changes that resulted, and stresses the limited importance of formal trading institutions for the development of local trade. Commercial transition is throughout analysed from a broader perspective that looks at the changing power relations within medieval society (which might loosely be described as feudal), and considers how these relations were affected by such commercial development.
