Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected English Short Stories (XIX and XX Centuries) My father is the curate of a village church, about five miles from Amwell. I was born in the parsonage-house, which joins the church-yard. The first thing I can remember was my father teaching me the alphabet from the letters on a tombstone that stood at the head of my mother's grave. I used to tap at my father's study-door; I think I now hear him say, 'Who is there? - What do you want, little girl?' 'Go and see mamma. Go and learn pretty letters.' Many times in the day would my father lay aside his books and his papers to lead me to this spot, and make me point to the letters, and then set me to spell syllables and words: in this manner, the epitaph on my mother's tomb being my primer and my spelling-book, I learned to read. I was one day sitting on a step placed across the church-yard stile, when a gentleman passing by, heard me distinctly repeat the letters which formed my mother's name, and then say, Elizabeth Villiers, with a firm tone, as if I had performed some great matter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Short Story in English In the first place, it must be admitted that the follow ing pages betray a preoccupation' with the short story, so much so, indeed, that certain chapters may suggest the robin who saw only earthworms on the field of Gettysburg. I have applied, whenever possible, such remedy as a careful relating of the stories under discussion to other literature could afford. If space had permitted, I would have gone further afield. Yet it is not to be forgotten that when earthworms are desired, a certain narrow-mindedness is almost indispensable! Next, I must apologize for what I hope is only an appearance of evil. Such a book as this moves insensibly towards the doctrinaire. Much of its field is new, un ploughed, unfenced, almost unsurveyed. Tale must be classed with tale, or a difference set between them, and lines of development must be run from story-group to story-group; otherwise, the material unearthed by reading and study, and exhibited in the completed work, will remain unfit for assimilation, unplaced in literary history. For all this, theories are necessary, and much talk about the theoretical. Nevertheless, in establishing my theories, I have tried to keep footing upon a solid base of observed fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of the Short Story: Selected Stories With Reading Lists The prominence of the short story as a literary form has led to the preparation of several textbooks on the subject. Some of these are treatises on the technique of the short story, others give specimens selected to show the historical development of the type. But a course in the writing of short stories belongs in college work, and the study of the evolution of literary forms has its proper place in the university. The present volume is prepared for the high school student. It does not aim to trace 'the develop ment of the short story, but accepting it as a literary type, considers the chief forms in which it is found today. To this end thirteen stories, each illustrating a well-defined type, are presented. Each selection is followed by brief comment and a list of other stories of the same type, the purpose being to lead the student to a wider and more intelligent reading in this enjoyable field of literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected English Short Stories, XIX Century (First Series) 'Whatever men do' is a phrase which describes the theme of the story-teller as well as that of the satirist. The most universal of human interests is the interest of man in his brother man. We should expect this universal interest to manifest itself early, and to do so first in a direct and simple rather than in an indirect and critical fashion. And this is what we actually find. The literary critic can with reasonable accuracy trace the rise of satire; but who shall assign an origin to the story? Even the higher criticism would place Genesis - comparatively speaking - fairly near the beginning of things; and Genesis contains some of the finest tales ever penned. When the curtain rises on the literature of Greece, it reveals an Iliad and an Odyssey, each of which is a long story skilfully woven out of many short tales. So, again, when light breaks through the darkness of the North, it discloses that great collection of the heroic legends of Scandinavia, the Edda; and when our own branch of the Teutonic race migrated from the Continent, among the furniture it deemed too precious to be left behind was, apparently, the group of legends from which sprang Beowulf.
