This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Political Parties and Leaders in the Reign of Queen Anne 1702-1710 The Age of Anne is one of the most interesting in English history. It was a reign when political parties were in such a state of flux that politicians changed sides with little hesitation; when periodicals began to play a transcendent part in politics; when pamphleteering became the customary method of changing public opinion; when literary men were usually politicians first of all; when ecclesiastical policies were determined by political exigencies, and church offices considered as a part of the civil service; when monied men began to take a greater interest in elections and play a larger part in determining national policies; when the cabinet was rapidly evolving into its present form; when the Protestant succession hung in the balance; when Scotland joined her southern sister in a firm alliance; when hatred of France became almost a religion; and when the United Kingdom gained the political and commercial hegemony of Europe that was lost by France at the treaty of Utrecht. Yet in spite of the interest and importance of this period it has been almost entirely neglected by serious historians for more than a generation. Nearly a half century ago Mahon and Wyon wrote their histories of the reign of Anne, and since that time no attempt has been made to deal with the history of the reign in the light of new materials that have recently become accessible. Book Queen Anne

Download or read book Queen Anne written by Edward Gregg and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reign of Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch, was a period of significant progress for the country: Britain became a major military power on land, the union of England and Scotland created a united kingdom of Great Britain, and the economic and political basis for the Golden Age of the eighteenth century was established. However, the queen herself has received little credit for these achievements and has long been pictured as a weak and ineffectual monarch dominated by her advisers. This landmark biography of Queen Anne shatters that image and establishes her as a personality of integrity and invincible stubbornness, the central figure of her age. Praise for the earlier edition: “A thoughtful and . . . authoritative study, easily the best thing we have on the Queen. Like Anne herself, it is eminently worthy.”—Angus McInnes, History “With the appearance of this volume, a generation of revision in Queen Anne studies comes to fruition.”—Henry Horowitz, American Historical Review “The best kind of biography, scholarly but sympathetic, as well as highly readable.”—John Kenyon, The Observer “Bold . . . startling . . . imaginative and persuasive.”—G.C. Gibbs, London Review of Books

Book The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685 1760

Download or read book The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685 1760 written by Robert Munter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Munter studies the growth and changing nature of the Irish periodical press from the time of the Protestant Ascendancy under William III to 1760, when provincial papers began to flourish outside Dublin. This was the period when newspapers were produced very largely in Dublin, mostly for local circulation among the English-speaking Protestant upper class. Dr Munter first sets the production of newspapers within the general history of Irish printing and bookselling, and the organisation of the trade. He then examines particular aspects of Irish newspaper history, presenting evidence about the importation of paper and the growth of local manufacture; the development of advertising and its importance as an element in the financial structure of the newspaper; evidence of the profitability of newspapers; circulation figures; the effect of the communications system on the supply and dissemination of news; the status of journalists and the development of the journalistic ethic; and analysis of the contents of the papers.
