This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Painting From the Seventh Century to the Present Day This is the first book on English Painting that deals with the whole period from the seventh century to the present day. Something of the relation of English to Continental Art has also been indicated. I have studied at first hand the great majority of the paintings that I have described; and in judging of them my conclusions are my own. In covering so wide a field within the limits of a single volume, it was impossible to describe the work of all painters of merit. I have therefore selected for descrip tion whatever interested me most, at the same time aim ing at keeping clear the general developments in each period. Landscape, England's greatest contribution to painting, has been given more space than portraiture. Imaginative figure-composition, though it ceased for a long period to exist in England, is one of the oldest as it is one of the newest of English pictorial arts. It has brought forth our most varied powers 0 of invention; and the illus trations here are a reminder that Hogarth and Blake, Stevens and holman-hunt, and even Lamb and Spencer are of the same race as the great mediaeval illuminators and wall-painters. I can here only thank in general terms those many friends whose comments, suggestions and corrections have helped me in this book. I desire to express my especial gratitude to Sir Charles Holmes and to Mr. C. H. Collins Baker for much valuable advice, and to Mr. W. G. Constable for guidance in reading, for much detailed constructive criticism and for suggesting at the outset a plan for the order of the chapters, without which I could hardly have attacked so vast a subject. Book John Rothenstein in the Interwar Years

Download or read book John Rothenstein in the Interwar Years written by David McCann and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appointed in 1938, Sir John Rothenstein was the first director of the Tate to embrace modern art, mounting a series of daring exhibitions and procuring a procession of audacious masterworks that, in the words of one contemporary, ‘completely knocked the stuffiness out of that veritable institution.' So why, since he died in 1991, has his name become a byword for reactionary conservatism? The answer is that from the outset of his career, Rothenstein refused to bow to the patriarchs of the avant-garde. In the 1920s, while they were busy decrying the figurative tradition, Rothenstein was championing a brilliant generation of artists whose work remained firmly rooted within it. In the 1930s, while they advocated a geometrical art of the utmost austerity, Rothenstein used his first curatorial positions to promote a new wave of exciting young British realists. Pitted against the progressives of Hampstead and Bloomsbury and inspired by the anti-vanguardism of his father and Wyndham Lewis, this book charts Rothenstein's earliest efforts to champion modern realistic painting in an age of abstraction. Along the way, it uncovers his selfless and pioneering patronage of artists as diverse as Stanley Spencer, Edward Bawden, Evelyn Dunbar, Paul Nash, Charles Mahoney, and Eric Ravilious. In so doing, it also establishes his importance in the reassessment of twentieth-century figuration going on today.

Book The Frenzy of Renown

Download or read book The Frenzy of Renown written by Leo Braudy and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1997-11-25 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Remarkably ambitious . . . an impressive tour de force.” —Washington Post Book World For Alexander the Great, fame meant accomplishing what no mortal had ever accomplished before. For Julius Caesar, personal glory was indistinguishable from that of Rome. The early Christians devalued public recognition, believing that the only true audience was God. And Marilyn Monroe owed much of her fame to the fragility that led to self-destruction. These are only some of the dozens of figures that populate Leo Braudy’s panoramic history of fame, a book that tells us as much about vast cultural changes as it does about the men and women who at different times captured their societies' regard. Spanning thousands of years and fields ranging from politics to literature and mass media, The Frenzy of Renown explores the unfolding relationship between the famous and their audiences, between fame and the representations that make it possible. Hailed as a landmark at its original publication and now reissued with a new Afterword covering the last tumultuous decade, here is a major work that provides our celebrity-obsessed, post-historical society with a usable past. “Expansive . . . Braudy excels at rocketing a general point into the air with the fuel of drama. ” —Harper's

Book excerpt: This work, first published in 1968, presents the fabulous world of Hinduism in its entirety in two volumes. It is the first general encyclopedia of Hinduism covering every major aspect of Hindu life and thought, embodying the results of modern scholarship yet not ignoring the traditional point of view. It contains over 700 articles, each of which gives a comprehensive account of the subject, and by a system of cross references interlinks all topics related to it, so that a single theme may be traced in all its ramifications through the whole book. An index of over 8,000 items, which in itself forms a veritable treasury of Sanskrit terms and names, will further assist the researcher finding their way among the lesser topics treated in the work.
