Book Exploring Bach s B minor Mass

Download or read book Exploring Bach s B minor Mass written by Yo Tomita and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-17 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-minor Mass has always represented a fascinating challenge to musical scholarship. Composed over the course of Johann Sebastian Bach's life, it is considered by many to be the composer's greatest and most complex work. The fourteen essays assembled in this volume originate from the International Symposium 'Understanding Bach's B-minor mass' at which scholars from eighteen countries gathered to debate the latest topics in the field. In revised and updated form, they comprise a thorough and systematic study of Bach's Opus Ultimum, including a wide range of discussions relating to the Mass's historical background and contexts, structure and proportion, sources and editions, and the reception of the work in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In the light of important new developments in the study of the piece, this collection demonstrates the innovation and rigour for which Bach scholarship has become known.

Book Portrait of Walton

Download or read book Portrait of Walton written by Michael Kennedy and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1998 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a corrected reissue, in Clarendon Paperbacks format with a new cover, of Michael Kennedy's classic study of William Walton's life and works. In this biography by one of England's foremost writers on music, Walton's personality emerges in all its complexity and self-contradiction. Michael Kennedy portrays a creative artist completely committed to his art yet plagued by misgiving and doubts, prey to insecurity and frustration, vulnerableto criticism, and jealous of the achievement of others. At the same time he was witty and generous, bore no grudges, and enjoyed the loyalty of a host of friends. Appointed his biographer by the composer himself, Kennedy has had access to correspondence with many of the friends and colleagues who were important in Walton's life, among them Siegfried Sassoon, Benjamin Britten, Malcolm Arnold, and Andre Previn. His compassionate and perceptive biography willbe welcomed by all devotees of Walton and his music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'When was the score of the Requiem completed?' is a question that everyone has asked; . . .but Wolff goes on to ask: 'Where do the technical and stylistic premises for the Requiem lie, and to what extent could these be taken into account after Mozart's death?' This question is rich in implications, central to the uniqueness of the work, and virtually undiscussed in the Mozart literature."—Thomas Bauman, co-author of Mozart's Operas

Download or read book The Langloz Manuscript written by Johann Sebastian Bach and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2001 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sorts of processes were going through the mind of J.S. Bach as he improvised a fugue in three, four, or even six parts? And what sort of training equipped an organist of the early eighteenth century to practice the art of accompaniment and improvisation successfully? The practical method which linked keyboard technique, improvisation, performance, and composition in a continuum was the thoroughbass, the center of the Baroque musicians art. The Langloz Manuscript, originating in the era and proximity of Bach's region of activity, and containing the largest extant collection of figured bass fugues, provides a window into this very process, and demonstrates more clearly than any words can the method by which the art of thoroughbass provided a foundation for extemporised fugue. The present edition is the first publication of this manuscript.
