This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Titus Livius' Roman History: Translated Into English, and Illustrated With Notes, Critical, Historical and Geographical, for the Use of Students in Humanity In the study of history there is this peculiar advantage There you have examples of every kind set before you, in a conspicuous point of view; whence you may set up models for your imitation, as an individual or a state, or beacons to warn you against base attempts, which end in disgrace. But either I am prepossessed in favour of the work I have undertaken, or there never was a state more respectable for its greatness, its sanctity, or variety of excellent characters. Never was there into which luxury and avarice found their way nor where poverty and frugality were held so long and so much in re te, that the less they had, the less they desired. Of te years, riches have introduced luxury, soda profusion of pleasures, a taste for extravagance in all the ways of riot and debauchery: but as complaints will not even then be agreeable, when perhaps they are necessary, let us at least drop them in the introduction to so great a work, or rather, were it fashionable with us histdrians, as it is with the poets, set out with more eniivening ideas, with good omens, and vows, and prayers to the gods and goddesses, that they would vouchsafe to-grant success, adequate to the greatness of the undertaking. Eh, come s'ta he said, standing bare-headed; e pezzo pezzo che non ci vediamo. He fluted the words with mellifluous assur ance, and I did my best to meet his humour with my own poor bits and shreds of Italian. There were no flute notes in my repertory; but I made a jest of my round British style and mouthed out some attempt at a Roman compliment. As quick as thought he countered it with another; and that was surely enough of the joke - the joke of our standing there bare-headed, flourishing our hats at each other with Italian airings; so I let loose my pent-up English talk, after those weeks of unnatural silence, and tumbled out exclamation and question as they came - I was voluble, enjoying the release of the tongue, and there were forty things I wanted to say and hear, for this meeting was quite unexpected and exceed ingly opportune; and so I chattered forth my surprise and pleasure, and then - and then I found them left upon my hands, somehow, and I looked rather a fool. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Appian's Roman History, Vol. 1 of 4: With an English Translation The historian, Appian, was a native of Alexandria, Egypt. All that we know about him as an individual is gleaned from his'own writings and from the letters of Fronto, the tutor of Marcus Aurelius. It is sup posed that he was born about a.d. 95 and that he died about a.d. 165. A fragment Of his works found in recent years speaks Of a war against the Jews in Egypt in which he had an adventure. This was probably the war waged by the Emperor Trajan to suppress the Jewish insurrection in that country, a.d. 116. In the preface to his history he says that he reached a high station in his own country and afterwards became a pleader of causes in the court of the emperors at Rome (probably as advocatus fisci) until he was appointed procurator by them. In order to be qualified for the latter Office he must have been a Roman citizen Of equestrian rank. The time of writing the preface is indicated as 900 years from the founding Of the city, which would be during the reign of Antoninus Pius. A letter of Fronto to Antoninus is extant asking the appointment of his friend Appian as procurator, not to gratify his ambi.
