Book The Poetry of Sir Philip Sidney

Download or read book The Poetry of Sir Philip Sidney written by John Gordon Nichols and published by Liverpool : Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 1974 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The manysidedness of Sidney's achievement so impressed his contemporaries that Sir Walter Ralegh described him as the 'Scipio, Cicero, and Petrarch of our time'. Dr. Nichols concentrates on Sidney's success as a poet, but sees the poetry in the light of Sidney's other interests and ambitions. Naturally most attention is given to the poet's masterpiece, Astrophil and Stella, the first sonnet sequence in English. The author stresses the progress of the thought and imagery within each poem, and insists that each should be studied individually and not merely as a contribution to the narrative. Much of the fascination of Sidney's work lies in his ingenuity. his rapid changed in tone, and his pervasive wit and humour. Assuming a basic knowledge of Sidney's life and interests, Dr. Nichols leads the reader carefully towards and appreciation of these charming and exuberant poems, and offers a perceptive interpretation of the poetry of this versatile soldier, scholar, and poet." -Publisher.

Book An Apologie for Poetrie by Sir Philip Sidney

Download or read book An Apologie for Poetrie by Sir Philip Sidney written by Evelyn S. Shuckburgh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was first published in 1891, this edition of Sir Philip Sidney's Apologie for Poetrie (or the Defense of Poetry) represented a clear departure from previous editions. The Cambridge Fellow and classical scholar Evelyn S. Shuckburgh set to the task of correcting the numerous errors and alterations which had accumulated over the course of many previous editions, beginning with the folio version of 1598. Shuckburgh's text draws from the collation of seven earlier editions, giving precedence to the first printing of 1595 for which he consulted the copy held in the British Museum. The result is a precise and thorough text, complete with notes, a glossarial index and an introductory description of Sidney's life and works.

Book Sir Philip Sidney

Download or read book Sir Philip Sidney written by Albert Charles Hamilton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977-06-23 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general critical study of Sidney's life and works, first published in 1977: his life in relation to his works and both in relation to his age. In the late 1570s and early 1580s, when the literary scene in England was barren, Sidney emerged as the right man at the right moment to establish a national literature. In his Defence of Poetry he formulated a poetic which showed 'why and how' imaginative literature could be written in Protestant England; and in his poetry and prose, chiefly in Astrophel and Stella and the two versions of The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia, he revealed that the English language was, as he claimed, 'indeed capable of any excellent exercising of it'. Through the influence of his personality, his critical insight, and his brilliant achievement in both poetry and prose - which Professor Hamilton in this study establishes through careful analysis - Sidney became the central figure of the English literary Renaissance.

Book The Making of Sir Philip Sidney

Download or read book The Making of Sir Philip Sidney written by Edward Berry and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1998-12-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does a poet make himself, or do his culture and his fiction make him? Sir Philip Sidney is one of the most popular and enduring of Elizabethan authors, and one of those most preoccupied with the relationship between self, society, and art. Edward Berry's The Making of Sir Philip Sidney explores how Sidney 'made' or created himself as a poet by 'making' representations of himself in the roles of some of his most literary creations: Philisides, Astrophil, and the intrusive persona of the Defence of Poetry. Focusing on the significance of these and other self-representations throughout Sidney's career, Berry combines biography, social history, and literary criticism to achieve a carefully balanced portrayal of the poet's life and work. This is a book that makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Sidney, and is likely to appeal to both students and scholars of Sidney, as well as to those wishing to understand the cultural events that shaped this central figure of the English Renaissance.
