Book excerpt: The million copy, Booker Prize finalist, besteller “To describe this novel as spine-tingling in its indescribable poetic effect would be to trivialize its profoundly tragic theme. Say then that it is heart-stunning.”—The New York Times It is a dream of electrifying eroticism and inexplicable violence, recounted by a young woman to her analyst, Sigmund Freud. It is a horrifying yet restrained narrative of the Holocaust. It is a searing vision of the wounds of the twentieth century, and an attempt to heal them. Interweaving poetry and case history, fantasy and historical truth-telling, The White Hotel is a modern classic of enduring emotional power that attempts nothing less than to reconcile the notion of individual destiny with that of historical fate.

Book 1000 Years of English Literature

Download or read book 1000 Years of English Literature written by Chris Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Library is home to an unparalleled collection of original manuscripts of great English literature, from the tenth-century manuscript of Beowulf to the work of such twentieth-century authors as T. S. Eliot, Ted Hughes, and Angela Carter. With 1000 Years of English Literature, Chris Fletcher shares some of the gems from the collection. Originally published in 2003, this updated and expanded paperback edition chronicles the life and work of more than one hundred of the best-loved British writers, with greater attention paid to the writers of the twentieth century. Each spread begins with an engaging sketch of the life and significance of the author, then offers a reproduced portion of manuscript on the facing page. Among the writers included are Shakespeare, Dickens, Wordsworth, and Larkin, and the volume also presents such masterpieces as Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, and Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. Whether written on parchment, vellum, or paper, and whether poems, short stories, novels, or diaries, these documents offer fascinating insights into the world of the writer at work and at times reveal major amendments and corrections carried out during the course of writing. An inspiring vision of literary achievement, 1000 Years of English Literature will not only teach and delight but also enrich the pleasure of reading and rereading the best literature Britain has to offer.

Examining books for children published across five centuries, gathered from the collections in Dublin, this unique volume advances causes in collecting, librarianship, education, and children’s literature studies more generally. It facilitates processes of discovery and recovery that present various pathways for researchers with diverse interests in children’s books to engage with collections. From book histories, through bookselling, information on collectors, and histories of education to close text analyses, it is evident that there are various approaches to researching collections. In this volume, three dominant approaches emerge: history and canonicity, author and text, ideals and institutions. Through its focus on varied materials, from fiction to textbooks, this volume illuminates how cities can articulate a vision of children's literature through particular collections and institutional practices.

Book Bibliographical Collections and Notes on Early English Literature

Download or read book Bibliographical Collections and Notes on Early English Literature written by W. Carew Hazlitt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliographical Collections and Notes on Early English Literature: Made During the Years 1893 1903 After a considerable delay, and with no slight hesitation, I launch a further volume, on the serial principle, of my Bibliography, which now looks back so far as 1867, when the Handbook appeared. Much of that pioneer has since been superseded by later discoveries; but much yet retains its original value and authority. The present may be safely taken absolutely to represent my last essay in this direction. I cannot afford to spend any more money in printing my labours, and as I live in England, and not in Germany or Russia, it is useless to expect help from the Government even for a purpose of so national a character and compass. Mine is not a bare list of titles, but an account accompanied by literary notices, and in important cases quotations of prices. But the revolution in the book market of late years, owing to American competition, renders such particulars, as a rule, of doubtful utility. At the same time, the difficulty of obtaining certain classes of early literature may be treated as an argument in favour of what Charles Lamb, in a letter to Charles Ollier, terms "Books about Books." I have the pleasure and the honour of acknowledging myself indebted for assistance in my researches in London, at Oxford and Cambridge, at Manchester, Salisbury, Exeter, Peterborough, York, Edinburgh, and else where, to a considerable number of gentlemen, no less than to the lading members of the book trade and auctioneers.
