Book Biography of the English Language

Download or read book Biography of the English Language written by Arthur MacArthur and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biography of the English Language: With Critical Remarks Upon the Works of Ancient and Modern Authors, and Some Account of Their History; Also an Examination Into the Present Position of English Among the Languages of the World In the remote wilds of Northern Europe a number of nations existed, each having a distinct name but all speaking dialeets of the same language. The Saxons were one of these tribes, and several others who were near neighbors joined them on their settlementin Britain. The Angles, who were probably the most numerous of the confederates, gave their name to the island, and the Saxons on the other hand gave their name to the race, and the names of both were merged into the double compound anglo-saxon. At that time Germany consisted of many nationalities that were known under the general terms of Saxons, Goths, Germans, and Teutons. We therefore speak of our forefathers' speech as Saxon, Gothic, Ger manic, and Teutonic. These, however, mean the same people and the same language, and in speaking of the-english it is understood by any one or all of these names, and in that sense I use them inter changeably in the present volume. Book excerpt: The English Language: A Historical Introduction covers the history of the English language from its prehistoric Indo-European origins to the present day. Assuming no previous knowledge of the subject, Charles Barber describes the nature of language and language change, and presents a history of the English language at different periods, dealing with key topics such as grammar, pronunciation and semantics. Where necessary, he introduces and explains the main theoretical and technical concepts of historical linguistics. There are also chapters on English in the scientific age, English as a world language and the future of the language. Charles Barber uses dozens of familiar texts, including the English of King Alfred, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Addison, to illustrate the state of the English language through time in a range of contexts. Book History of English

Download or read book History of English written by Dan McIntyre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routledge English Language Introductions cover core areas of language study and are one-stop resources for students. Assuming no prior knowledge, books in the series offer an accessible overview of the subject, with activities, study questions, sample analyses, commentaries and key readings – all in the same volume. The innovative and flexible ‘two-dimensional’ structure is built around four sections – introduction, development, exploration and extension – which offer self-contained stages for study. Each topic can also be read across these sections, enabling the reader to build gradually on the knowledge gained. This revised second edition of History of English includes: ❑ a comprehensive introduction to the history of English covering the origins of English, the change from Old to Middle English, and the influence of other languages on English; ❑ increased coverage of key issues, such as the standardisation of English; ❑ a wider range of activities, plus answers to exercises; ❑ new readings of well-known authors such as Manfred Krug, Colette Moore, Merja Stenroos and David Crystal; ❑ a timeline of important external events in the history of English. Structured to reflect the chronological development of the English language, History of English describes and explains the changes in the language over a span of 1,500 years, covering all aspects from phonology and grammar, to register and discourse. In doing so, it incorporates examples from a wide variety of texts and provides an interactive and structured textbook that will be essential reading for all students of English language and linguistics.

Book History of English

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English: A Sketch of the Origin and Development of the English Language With Examples, Down to the Present Day In order to make the book complete there should, no doubt, have been an introductory chapter on Sounds, and how they are made.' 'this is omitted, partly in order to limit the book to some moderate length, partly because of the extreme difficulty of making such a chapter at once scientifically adequate and interesting to the ordinary reader. I have done my best to make what is stated in the course of the book intelligible without such an introduction. The book may perhaps seem in some places rather encumbered with notes. My principle has been to keep the text as short as possible, adding at the foot of the page such further explanations, illustrations, and cautions against mis take as some readers might be likely to wish for or require. Where any of these necessarily exceeded the limits of a footnote I have put it as an appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The book, which is worthy of the wide reputation and ripe experience of the eminent author, is distinguished throughout by clear, brief, and comprehensive statement and illustration. It is especially suited for private students or for classes desiring to make a brief and rapid review, and also for teachers who want only a brief text as a basis for their own instruction. +Dead and Living Languages.+-- A language is said to be dead when it is no longer spoken. Such a language we know only in books. Thus, Latin is a dead language, because no nation anywhere now speaks it. A dead language can undergo no change; it remains, and must remain, as we find it written in books. But a living language is always changing, just like a tree or the human body. The human body has its periods or stages. There is the period of infancy, the period of boyhood, the period of manhood, and the period of old age. In the same way, a language has its periods.
