Book excerpt: The Ju|'hoan Children's Picture Dictionary is a collaborative project between the Namibian Ju|'hoan from Namibia's Tsumkwe region and academics from various fields. The primary aim of the dictionary is to provide Ju|'hoan children with a piece of mother-tongue literature that is locally inspired and that can also be shared with those from the outside world. Entries in this thematic dictionary are in the Ju|'hoan Tsumkwe dialect, Afrikaans, and English. All the illustrations and artwork were created by Ju|'hoan people from the Tsumkwe region, who share their knowledge and insight into different facets of Ju|'hoan daily life. Great care has gone into the making of this dictionary, with members of the Ju|'hoan community leading the way in the selection of themes, lexical entries, design, and layout to make this publication a community-driven project that highlights Ju|'hoan culture. The selected entries give rare and fascinating insight into the staple artifacts and traditions of San life. Included is an interactive CD-ROM with a pronunciation guide for each entry provided by Ju|'hoan speakers, as well as a photo and video gallery, short biographies of contributors, interesting information about the Ju|'hoan people and a fun printable language game. The dictionary will help spread awareness about the Ju|'hoan language and culture to stop this endangered language from disappearing forever. Inspired by the optimism of Independence, the project was designed in close consultation with the Ju|hoansi community in the early 1990s. Drawing upon their traditional knowledge transmission strategies, and initiated in a supportive political environment, the project exemplified best practice. During the following two decades, the Village Schools have transitioned from a donor-supported project to government schools, and have received much attention and support from donors, civil society organisations, researchers, and others.However, the students still do not seem to succeed in the mainstream schools. Why is this? Based on long-term field-work in the region, including interviews with Nyae Nyae residents over several years and work with involved organisations, the book addresses this question. Contextualising the Village Schools within post-Independence Namibia, southern African history and the global indigenous rights movement, it examines the enormous paradoxes that schooling presents for the Nyae Nyae community. Owners of Learning is the English translation of the Ju|hoansi word for teacher and it serves to highlight a fundamental question to whom does education belong?

Book excerpt: Whereas Africa as a typological area is often associated with extensive verb morphology and verb serialization, this collection of studies shows that there is tremendous typological diversity at the clausal level. Verb serialization in the Khoisan area contrasts with extensive case-marking in languages of northeastern Africa, which also use converbs and light verb plus coverb constructions. Although the categorial distinction between nouns and verbs is generally clear in African languages, a number of them nevertheless provide intricate analytical challenges in this respect. Whereas some languages are strongly head marking at the clausal level, others manifest an interesting mixture of alternative strategies for the coding of participants. The analysis of information packaging, and related issues such as split ergativity, Differential Object Marking, and discourse-configurational properties also play a role in several contributions. The collection contains not only innovative analyses for the respective language families these languages belong to, but also material relevant for the current debate in theoretical linguistics concerning lexical specification as against construction-based approaches towards argument structure.
