Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History in the Fourteenth Century State of England in the 14th Century. - Towards the end of the thirteenth century England was perhaps the best ordered and most prosperous state in Europe. Politi cally, indeed, its power was small, for our kings only retained a portion of their old dominions in France, and these, it might seem, merely by sufferance. Scotland was independent under a native dynasty, a great part of Ireland was in reality unconquered. Nevertheless, three quarters of a century passed in comparative peace had doubled the population, and more than doubled its wealth respect for law had grown to an extent unknown elsewhere and the serfs were rapidly being enfranchised. The annexation of North Wales had delivered the English marches from the dread of invasion. There were no towns in England except London that could vie with the wealth of Ghent or Bruges in Flanders, or of Venice and Florence in Italy 3 but the English towns were parts of a compact dominion, at peace with one another, and protected by the armies of a whole kingdom. Our kings could not bring into the field as many thousand soldiers as gathered under the banners of the French monarchs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of English Literature The Beginnings of English Literature. The Difficulties attend ing them. The Advisability of taking Chaucer as our Starting Point. The Necessity of Knowing the Outlines of Earlier Days before even Chaucer is attempted. English literature may be said to begin with some fragments of poetry that date back as far as the fourth century; and, for the ten centuries following, our literature is extremely difficult to understand, because it is written either in Anglo Saxon, or else in one of the dialects of Middle English. It took a thousand years for English literature to develop properly; and we do not come across any author who can be easily mastered until we arrive at the middle of the fourteenth century. Then we find Geoffrey Chaucer one of the greatest of our poets, who died in the year 1400. We cannot, however, properly appreciate even his work unless we know something of the condition of English between the fourth and the fourteenth centuries; and this knowledge we must try to obtain by learning a little about the principal things that happened to the language before Chaucer's time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mediaeval England: English Feudal Society From the Norman Conquest to the Middle of the Fourteenth Century It is no primitive or low civilisation that we have to describe in the England of 1066 - 1350 it differs from ours more in kind than in degree. In its own kind we cannot deny its majesty, for, though we may not always realise it, it still has dominion over us. Further, it is to be remembered that the English Middle Ages are in their main character one with the continental Middle Ages in certain aspects only have they a character peculiarly their own. In this volume the evidence must be strictly confined to England; but to those who read the mediaaval evidences it needs not to be said that much which is true of our country at that time is true also of others. Insularity was not in the Middle Ages a pre dominant English character. Our original oneness with the continent and the lines of our later diver gence become most perceptible to us when we travel in Europe, for it is upon the continent that we most often come across some of the outward signs of mediaeval life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lion of St. Mark: A Story of Venice, in the Fourteenth Century Of all the chapters of history there are few more interesting or wonderful than that which tells the story of the rise and progress of Venice. Built upon a few sandy islands in a shallow lagoon, and originally founded by fugitives from the mainland, Venice became one of the greatest and most respected powers of Europe. She was mistress of the sea; conquered and ruled over a considerable territory bordering on the Adriatic; checked the rising power of the Turks; conquered Constantinople; successfully defied all the attacks of her jealous rivals to shake her power; and carried on a trade relatively as great as that of England in the present day. I have laid my story in the time not of the triumphs of Venice, but of her hardest struggle for existence - when she defended herself successfully against the coalition of Hungary, Padua, and Genoa - for never at any time were the virtues of Venice, her steadfastness, her patriotism, and her willingness to make all sacrifice for her independence more brilliantly shown. The historical portion of the story is drawn from Hazlitt's History of the Republic of Venice, and with it I have woven the adventures of an English boy endowed with a full share of that energy and pluck which, more than any other qualities, have made the British empire the greatest the world has ever seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Close of the Middle Ages: 1273-1494 More prominent than Spain and England, or even than France; and that Germany and Italy are not coherent states at all. The former is abundle of states, and the latter can hardly be said to be as much. And it may be urged with some force that German history in the fourteenth century cannot be studied without some attention being paid to Poland, Hungary, and Denmark; that the history of Venice and Florence cannot be isolated from that of Genoa and Pisa; and that even in tracing the growth of states which achieved some measure of unity it is necessary to note the absorption of the formerly distinct and independent provinces. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of England Principally in the Seventeenth Century, Vol. 2 If we consider the embarrassment in which Charles I had been involved by his conduct of the war, we are tempted to assume that, in order to extricate himself from it, he must have opened negotiations with the two great powers with which he was at war whilst they were still at variance with one another. This however was not the case. Negotiations with France were opened at the instigation of the powers combined to resist Spain, between which an agreement had first been set on foot by James I, and had been renewed by Buckingham. Those powers regarded the breach between England and France as a misfortune, which they must endeavour to obviate if they would carry on the war against Austria and Spain with full vigour. The Republic of Venice, which felt itself most seriously threatened by these powers, made a great point of promoting a reconciliation between France and England by the agency of its ambassadors. A few days before his unhappy end, Buckingham withdrew with the Venetian ambassador, Aluise Contarini, into a retired chamber in one of his country-houses, and there concerted with him a letter of pacific import to his brother envoy in France, for him to communicate to the French court. Book Fourteenth Century England

Download or read book Fourteenth Century England written by Chris Given-Wilson and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays collected here present the fruits of the most recent research on aspects of the history, politics and culture of England during the long' fourteenth century - roughly speaking from the reign of Edward I to the reign of Henry V. Based on a range of primary sources, they are both original and challenging in their conclusions. Several of the articles touch in one way or another upon the subject of warfare, but the approaches which they adopt are significantly different, ranging from an analysis of the medieval theory of self-defence to an investigation of the relative utility of narrative and documentary sources for a specific campaign. Literary texts such as Barbour's Bruce are also discussed, and a re-evaluation of one particular set of records indicates that, in this case at least, the impact of the Black Death of 1348-9 may have been even more devastating than is usually thought. Chris Given-Wilson is Professor of Late Mediaeval History at the University of St Andrews. Contributors: Susan Foran, Penny Lawne, Paula Arthur, Graham E.
