This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English History From the Norman Conquet to the Great Reform Bill Our aim has been to write a suggestive guide to the study of English History. The Analysis at the head of each section is repeated in the margin, as a help in reading the narrative and in referring to the contents. The references in brackets are not necessarily intended as authorities for any particular statements but usually as indications where fuller treatment or more picturesque details are to be found. They are not inclusive and are purposely restricted, as a rule, to such books as are, or ought to be, generally accessible to boys we hope they will stimulate readers to study the subject much more fully than can be done by merely reading so small a book as this. The Maps are only intended as rough sketch. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Vast halls through which she leads her disciples the Dawn of I the New, the Less New, the More New, and the Most New (eocene, Miocene, Pliocene and Pleistocene). In the last of these halls, which is represented by a mere line on the geological ground plan, yet which may easily have had a dura tion of years, we at last find our fellow-countryman, the first human inhabitant, as far as we know, of the British Isles. In certain well-known caves on the south coast of Devonshire (kent's Cavern and Brixham) there were found some sixty years ago flint implements undoubtedly fashioned by human hands, along with the remains of hyenas and other animals long since extinct in the British Islands, and these were lying under a stalagmite floor which must have taken at least years, and may well have taken years, for its formation. It was thus conclusively proved that Paleolithic man whose handi work has been found in many other European countries, especi ally in the wonderfully interesting caves of Aquitaine, lived also, how many millenniums ago none can say, in the limestone caves of Britain. Besides these dwellers in caves and probably of an even earlier period than they, were the other Paleolithic men who have left abundant traces of their presence in the spear heads, flints, scrapers and other large stone implements which are often found in the gravel deposits of ancient rivers. Book Norman Britain Classic Reprint

Download or read book Norman Britain Classic Reprint written by William Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norman Britain This little book does not profess to be a history of events. In a series of short essays, treating facts rather as illustrations than as invested with any inde pendent importance, I have endeavoured to describe how the Teutonic Northmen were brought under Romance influences before they conquered our Teu tonic land and, considering the Norman period as a crisis in the long story of our people, when a Romance element was violently introduced into the population itself and into every phase of its life, to show how this foreign element, overwhelming as it seemed at the time, consummated many changes already in progress, preserved much, destroyed little, and made no violent break in our history. I have also tried here and there, as my space would allow, to point out some of the effects of the Norman rule on our later history, both as to what we have kept and as to what we have cast aside as hindrances to our national development. As Mr. Freeman, besides his great works on the Norman Conquest and on the reign of William Rufus, has also published a hand book of the Norman period, it may seem that in writing this volume I have been fishing in his waters. It was, however, at his request, and with his generous invitation to me to make use of all he had written, that I undertook to attempt the subject that he has made his own. Such as my work is, it will, I how, be evident that it has not been done without some familiarity with original authorities acquired not for this occasion only. References to most of the authorities I have used will be found in the foot notes. Since the publication of the Introduction to English History by Professor S. R. Gardiner and Mr. J. B. Mullinger, brief notices of these authorities are no longer wanted, and for any longer account of them I have no space. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Norman Conquest of England The following sketch had its birth in the mind of the writer through his accidental possession of a copy of L'Histoire des Ducs de Normandie et des Rois d'Angleterre - an anonymous chronicle in ancient French, which is supposed by competent authorities to have been written in the first quarter of the thirteenth century. By so distinguished an historian as Petit-Dutaillis (whose Life of Louis VIII. of France has been of invaluable aid in the preparation of this essay), L'Histoire des Ducs de Normandie et des Rois d'Angleterre is believed to be the work of an eye-witness of the scenes and events related. Careful study has been given in the preparation of this paper to the works of such chroniclers as Matthew Paris, Matthew of Westminster, Walter of Coventry, and especially Roger of Wendover. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Norman Conquest of England, Vol. 2: Its Causes and Its Results The fourth volume I shall devote to the reign of William in England. The Conquest, formally com pleted by his coronation, has now to be practically carried out throughout the land. The authority of William, already formally acknowledged, is gradually established over England; local resistance is over come the highest offices and the greatest landed estates throughout England are gradually transferred from natives to foreigners. Before William's death the work was thoroughly done, and the great Domes day Survey may be looked on as its record. The Conquest, in its immediate results, is now fully complete. D. 1066 HE main purpose of this short preface is to express my deep Obligation to many friends who have given me their assistance in revising and correcting Various parts of this volume. Three must be specially named. Mr. T. Rice Holmes, the author of Caesar's Conquest of Gaul, and of Ancient Britain and Caesar's Invasions, was good enough to look through the first four chapters, forming the prehistoric and early Celtic section, to make most valuable criticisms thereon, and to give me many fruitful suggestions. This part of my volume, indeed, may be said to be founded in a large measure on his researches, for his two books above mentioned were invaluable to me. Book The Norman Conquest

Download or read book The Norman Conquest written by Hugh M. Thomas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the successful Norman invasion of England in 1066, this concise and readable book focuses especially on the often dramatic and enduring changes wrought by William the Conqueror and his followers. From the perspective of a modern social historian, Hugh M. Thomas considers the conquest's wide-ranging impact by taking a fresh look at such traditional themes as the influence of battles and great men on history and assessing how far the shift in ruling dynasty and noble elites affected broader aspects of English history. The author sets the stage by describing English society before the Norman Conquest and recounting the dramatic story of the conquest, including the climactic Battle of Hastings. He then traces the influence of the invasion itself and the Normans' political, military, institutional, and legal transformations. Inevitably following on the heels of institutional reform came economic, social, religious, and cultural changes. The results, Thomas convincingly shows, are both complex and surprising. In some areas where one might expect profound influence, such as government institutions, there was little change. In other respects, such as the indirect transformation of the English language, the conquest had profound and lasting effects. With its combination of exciting narrative and clear analysis, this book will capture students interest in a range of courses on medieval and Western history.

Book History of the Anglo Saxons

Download or read book History of the Anglo Saxons written by Thomas Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Anglo-Saxons: From the Earliest Period to the Norman Conquest In the present attempt at a popular History of the Anglo-Saxons, I have endeavoured to avoid the dry, hard, matter-of-fact style of previous historians - to describe its important truths in a more picturesque and familiar manner - to bring out the actors and scenery more boldly before the eye of the reader - to throw more of a poetical spirit into the - narrative and to give it all the fascination of fiction, without altering a single recorded fact. Such a task scarcely presents an obstacle; history itself furnishes the romance-writer with the most dramatic incidents of his work, and they only require to be cast in a somewhat imaginative mould to make them more interesting than fiction. The hard, naked outline is not all that is necessary to represent truth; and it is this very want of a finer finish and a richer style of colouring that has driven so many readers to the Romance School of history, in which they have found only distorted facts and historical caricatures instead of truth. There are many who argue that the paths which lead to knowledge must of necessity be difficult and rugged. I believe that it is in the power of any author to make them much pleasanter than they are; and that to accomplish this he has only to amuse as well as to instruct, even as an agreeable companion will, by cheerful conversation, seem to shorten and lighten the way, however long and wearisome it may be in itself. Such a companion I have endeavoured to make this volume, and to bring the very scenery before the "mind's eye" of the reader, whether the events transpired on sea or land, in castle or cathedral, whenever such word-painting adds to the beauty, richness, and interest of our historical descriptions.
