Download or read book English Foxhound written by Chelsea Devon and published by Fox Chapel Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive, regal breed of scenthound derived from the centuries-old packs of France, the English Foxhound is an uncommon choice as a family companion, especially when compared to that small foxhound we know as the Beagle. The English Foxhound, first and foremost, is a thoroughbred hunting dog, prized for his athletic ability and stamina. The chapter on the breed’s history paints a romantic picture of the breed running ahead of British redcoats on the field as well as hunting alongside America’s first president, George Washington. Deciding whether the English Foxhound is the right dog for you is the focus of the chapter on the breed’s characteristics. This packhound is more biddable than his American cousin (the American Foxhound), though a bit larger, and requires a king’s portion of exercise, socialization, and daily attention. Because the English Foxhound was bred to run for long distances in the company of other foxhounds, his nature cannot be changed, and potential owners must decide whether they have the inclination to share their lives with such an active scenthound. For owners who decide to add an English Foxhound to their families, they will discover a happy-go-lucky, friendly companion dog that adores the company of children and enjoys being involved in the family’s activities. Inside this Comprehensive Owner’s Guide, new owners will find a well-prepared chapter on locating a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Given the rarity of the breed, new owners will require patience to find an English Foxhound puppy (or adult), but all breeders attest that it’s worth the wait. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, exercise, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author’s advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on health provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

Download or read book The Great Hound Match of 1905 written by Martha Wolfe and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-11-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1905, the peak of foxhunting season across the Midlands of England and up and down the east coast of North America, two towns in Virginia saw the coming of illustrious and wealthy men. There was to be a contest, a Great Hound Match, between two packs of foxhounds, one English and one American. The English hounds carried, on their great stout forearms and deep chests, the monumental weight of centuries of foxhunting in England and were expected to make their hound dog ancestors proud of their New World conquest. The American hounds were expected to show those stodgy old Brits how it was done over here—with spunk and intuition, individuality, drive, and nerve. This book chronicles this ostentatious match of Britain versus America at the turn of the century.

Download or read book The Story of the Plott Hound Strike Stay written by Bob Plott and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Plott bear hound, a dog originally from Germany and developed in the North Carolina mountains, is known as one of the world's best hunting dog breeds. Recognized now as one of the premier hunting dogs in America, the Plott bear hound is unique among hunting dog breeds because it descends from Germanic stock rather than the traditional English foxhound. The breed's story began when its original breeder, Johannes Plott, and his brother Enoch left Germany in 1750 with their prized hunting dogs. This trip across the Atlantic began the two-hundred-year journey that would culminate in the North Carolina mountains with the development of what is now arguably the world's finest breed of hunting dog. This fascinating story of the Plott family and the Plott hound is a classic American tale of adventurers and underdogs--a story that Bob Plott, the great-great-great-grandson of Johannes Plott, is uniquely qualified to tell.

Download or read book Medical Genetic Behavioral Risk Factors of American Foxhounds English Foxhounds and Harriers written by Ross D. Clark DVM and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (Harriers, American foxhounds and English foxhounds) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.
