The role of ESP in each of these is to facilitate work in today’s inevitably international business and scientific environment. It provides language training based on the precise simulation of communicative situations found in the surroundings for which learners are preparing, including, for example, domain specific vocabulary, syntactic and morphological structures, text and speech content structuring, stylistics, intercultural competence. At present, when English is present either as a foreign or second language, learning General English (GE) is to a large degree accomplished before learners start needing English for their jobs. In this way, ESP does not complete GE, but builds upon the foundations laid by it in learners’ prior education. ESP is a channel of communication for the contemporary academia and economics. However, even so, these are still early days for ESP, as it does not yet have a recognised place within academia. Only very recently have we begun to witness the occasional but encouraging emergence of ESP academic courses and departments. This book thus explores practice and research conducted and under way in this field of ELT in order to assist its recognition as an autonomous academic discipline.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Didactics - English - Miscellaneous, , language: English, abstract: This descriptive research examined the extent of application of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in the English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) curriculum for Grade 12 students in the public schools in the Municipality of Binalbagan, Negros Occidental. The participants of the study were the 233 Grade 12 students who were enrolled during the second semester of the school year 2017-2018. The quantitative descriptive design was utilized to determine the extent of application of ESP in the EAPP curriculum. The results revealed a high extent of application of ESP in the EAPP curriculum for Grade 12 students, however, when they were grouped according to each strand, HE and HUMSS were of the very high extent while GAS, IA, and AFA were of the high extent. Meanwhile, when the strands were categorized to Content Standard (CS), ABM and HE were of the very high extent while HUMSS, GAS, IA, and AFA were of the high extent of application. Also, when the strands are categorized according to Performance Standard (PS), HUMSS and HE were of the very high extent while GAS, IA, and AFA were of the high extent. There were significant differences found among the strands and standards in the extent of application of ESP in the EAPP curriculum. Hence, the proposed training program for ESP is designed to enrich the knowledge and learning materials for the senior high school students and the English teachers based on the findings of the study.

Book excerpt: This is a research study monograph into an approach known as Content and Language Integrated Learning or CLIL through English in Italian higher education. There is as yet little agreement on terminology, definitions, learning theories or classroom approaches as regards CLIL. A distinction is therefore made between CLIL, ICLHE (Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education), Content-based Instruction, L2-medium Instruction and Bilingual Education. The research design comprises both quantitative and qualitative elements. A questionnaire survey of all Italian universities profiled the many courses presently delivered using English as the vehicular language, and found some homogeneity in process and subjects, but differences linked to private or public funding and to geographical area. A survey of students (n=134) was designed and administered to obtain their evaluation of a list of techniques used by lecturers to help students understand lectures delivered through English. Respondents recognised and considered as useful most of the categories, including the use of repetitions, examples, summaries, definitions, synonyms, questions and emphasising with intonation. The qualitative part involved observing, recording, transcribing, and analysing lectures delivered through English by four university science lecturers, who were also interviewed. Results confirm the validity of some input presentation strategies and show similarities and differences between student and lecturer perceptions. The data also show discrepancies, at times, between the strategies considered useful by the lecturers and those actually used in the classes.
