Book Germanic Standardizations

Download or read book Germanic Standardizations written by Ana Deumert and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comparative, socio-historical study of the Germanic standard languages (Afrikaans, Danish, Dutch, English, Faroese, Frisian, German, Icelandic, Low German, Luxemburgish, Norwegian, Scots, Swedish, Yiddish as well as the Caribbean and Pacific Creole languages). Each of the 16 orginal chapters systematically discusses central aspects of the standardization process, including dialect selection, codification, elaboration and diffusion of the standard norm across the speech community, as well as incipient processes of de-standardization and re-standardization. The strongly comparative orientation of the contributions allow for the identification of broad similarities as well as intriguing differences across a wide range of historically and socially diverse language histories. Two chapters by the editors provide an overview of the theoretical background and rationale of comparative standardization research, and outline directions for further research in the area. The volume will be of interest to language historians as well as sociolinguists in general.

Book The Faroe Islands

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Wylie
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2021-10-21
  • ISBN : 0813185688
  • Pages : 391 pages

Download or read book The Faroe Islands written by Jonathan Wylie and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stranded in a stormy corner of the North Atlantic midway between Norway and Iceland, the Faroe Islands are part of "the unknown Western Europe"—a region of recent economic development and subnational peoples facing uncertain futures. This book tells the remarkable story of the Faroes' cultural survival since their Viking settlement in the early ninth century. At first an unruly little republic, the islands soon became tributary to Norway, dwindled into a Danish-Norwegian mercantilist fiefdom, and in 1816 were made a Danish province. Today, however, they are an internally self-governing Danish dependency, with a prosperous export fishery and a rich intellectual life carried out in the local language, Faroese. Jonathan Wylie, an anthropologist who has done extensive field work in the Faroes, creates here a vivid picture of everyday life and affairs of state over the centuries, using sources ranging from folkloric texts to parliamentary minutes and from census data to travelers' tales. He argues that the Faroes' long economic stagnation preserved an archaic way of life that was seriously threatened by their economic renaissance in the nineteenth century, especially as this was accompanied by a closer political incorporation into Denmark. The Faroese accommodated increasingly profound social change by selectively restating their literary and historical heritage. Their success depended on domesticating a Danish ideology glorifying "folkish" ways and so claiming a nationality separate from Denmark's. The book concludes by comparing the Faroes' nationality-without-nationhood to the contrasting situations of their closest neighbors, Iceland and Shetland. The Faroe Islands is an important contribution to Scandinavian as well as regional and ethnic studies and to the growing literature combining the insights and techniques of anthropology and history. Engagingly written and richly illustrated, it will also appeal to scholars in other fields and to anyone intrigued by the lands and peoples of the North.

Book The Nordic Languages

Download or read book The Nordic Languages written by Oskar Bandle and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2002 with total page 1194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The handbook is not tied to a particular methodology but keeps in principle to a pronounced methodological pluralism, encompassing all aspects of actual methodology. Moreover it combines diachronic with synchronic-systematic aspects, longitudinal sections with cross-sections (periods such as Old Norse, transition from Old Norse to Early Modern Nordic, Early Modern Nordic 1550-1800 and so on). The description of Nordic language history is built upon a comprehensive collection of linguistic data; it consists of more than 200 articles written by a multitude of authors from Scandinavian and German and English speaking countries. The organization of the book combines a central part on the detailed chronological developments and some chapters of a more general character: chapters on theory and methodology in the beginning and on overlapping spatio-temporal topics in the end.

Book Faroe Islands

    Book Details:
  • Author : James Proctor
  • Publisher : Bradt Travel Guides
  • Release : 2024-04-05
  • ISBN : 1804692581
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Faroe Islands written by James Proctor and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2024-04-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated sixth edition of Bradt’s Faroe Islands remains the only English-language guide to this isolated, unspoiled Nordic archipelago, home to Tórshavn (the world’s smallest capital), and where there are twice as many sheep as people – meaning that it’s still possible to discover a way of life that is fast disappearing elsewhere in Europe, a place where sheep were fitted with cameras to help film for Google Streetview (locally dubbed Google ‘Sheepview’). Visiting the Faroes is a chance to experience nature in the raw. Its breathtaking landscapes never fail to inspire, from the highest sea cliffs in Europe at Enniberg on the island of Viðoy to the dramatic seascapes at Akraberg, the southernmost point of the Faroes. Also included are details of how to reach even the remotest corners by bus using a travel card, information on changing seabird numbers in the North Atlantic, and details of where to go birdwatching and hiking. Written by expert author James Proctor, who has been visiting the Faroes since 1992, this guidebook offers detailed information about all 18 islands (including Mykines, whose year-round population is barely in double figures). Within the islands themselves, Bradt’s Faroe Islands is recognised as the definitive source of information about the Faroes in the English language – and is widely respected as such. There’s hands-on advice about where to stay and eat, how to get around – be it by local ferry, helicopter or your own hire car – and what to see and do. This latest edition includes all the most recent developments (including improvements in air, ferry and road travel – the latter including the world’s only subsea roundabout) and provides all the information needed for a successful trip, with updated reviews of accommodation (plus Tórshavn’s classy new hotels) and eating and drinking options. Whether you’re visiting for the amazing birdlife, to walk some of Europe’s least-known hiking trails or simply to sample real village life among the turf-roofed houses painted in a mêlée of reds, yellows and blues, Bradt’s Faroe Islands is the perfect companion.
