Download or read book An English Family written by Julio Dinis and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr Richard Whitestone is English and a successful businessman based for many years in Oporto. Despite his many years’ residence in Portugal, he remains resolutely English in his tastes and in his accent. His favourite reading is Tristram Shandy, which he reads and re-reads constantly. A widower for many years, he lives with his children Jenny and Carlos. Jenny is the angel of the house and wise beyond her 21 years. Carlos is 18 and much given to carousing with his friends and to falling – very briefly – in love with whichever pretty girl he sees. He is the despair of his father, but his sister believes in him despite all, because she knows he has a good heart. One day, during Carnival, Carlos meets a young woman at a masked ball and falls in love. As ever, the path of true love runs very erratically indeed. Júlio Dinis is sometimes referred to as the Portuguese Trollope, and this, the first novel he wrote is a keen-eyed evocation of the narrow world of nineteenth-century bourgeois Oporto, but also, and more importantly, it is a brilliant account of family life, in all its flawed beauty.

Elizabeth I, James I, Charles I, Charles II, James II, William III and Mary II, Anne, George I, George II, and George III--the English royals who were also the royals of early America--are all covered in this work. But the Durrells find that, reluctantly, they must share their various villas with a menagerie of local fauna - among them scorpions, geckos, toads, bats and butterflies. Can we catch up tonight at the pub to teach me a little bit of Russian?" Initially, I thought..."WTF? Is he serious? What has he been doing all these days?" I know that it takes at least a couple of weeks to get a Russian visa sorted in the Russian Visa Centre in London. So, he definitely didn't decide to fly to Moscow today! But then I thought...that's a challenge! That's a James Bond mission impossible...maybe possible! Can I teach him the very very basic? What is the very basic Russian? How do I teach him the very basic? If I had only a couple of hours, a pen and a few blank sheets, what would I write down for him? Sometimes, tight time restrictions can awake motivation: "Yes, we can do it!" In this book you'll find the things I wrote down for Robert that evening in the pub. The very basic. In the simplest words ever. I have to say that I enjoyed the challenge but I wrote this book for the next Robert who will ask me to catch up on the day before he flies to Moscow. If you see yourself in Robert, read this book. Don't f***** call me. Kindness and smiles, Angelos Explore Russian

Download or read book Family Names and Family History written by David Hey and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2006-06-22 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family names are an essential part of everyone's personal history. The story of their evolution is integral to family history and fascinating in its own right. Formed from first names, place names, nicknames and occupations, names allow us to trace the movements of our ancestors from the middle ages to the present day. David Hey shows how, when and where families first got their names, and proves that most families stayed close to their places of origin. Settlement patterns and family groupings can be traced back towards their origin by using national and local records. Family Names and Family History tells anyone interested in tracing their own name how to set about doing so.
