Book excerpt: Extracts Relating to Mediaeval Markets and Fairs in England is a book by Helen Douglas-Irvine. Excerpt: "There is no direct evidence as to the origin of markets and fairs in England. Early Oriental and classical literature indicate that they have served all peoples whose development has reached a certain stage. As communities cease to be entirely self-supporting trade arises naturally; and trade is obviously facilitated by a concentration in particular places at particular times of sellers and buyers."

Book English Medieval Industries

Download or read book English Medieval Industries written by John Blair and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is intended as a modern successor to L.F. Salzman's "English Industries in the Middle Ages" (1913). The approach to each industry is by material, discussing its acquisition, working and sale as a finished product. Only industries that resulted in the production of consumer goods and where substantial numbers of artefacts survive from the Middle Ages are dealt with (fishing and brewing are therefore omitted); the text is illustrated by pictures of surviving objects and contemporary representations of medieval work.

Book The Commercialisation of English Society 1000 1500

Download or read book The Commercialisation of English Society 1000 1500 written by R. H. Britnell and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commercialisation of English society offers a major new interpretation of social and economic change in England over five centuries. By 1500 English livelihoods depended more upon money and commercial transactions than ever before; the institutional framework of markets had been transformed, and urban development was more pronounced. These changes were not, however, caused by any unilinear development of population, output or money supply. This pioneering study examines both institutional and economic transformation, and the social changes that resulted, and stresses the limited importance of formal trading institutions for the development of local trade. Commercial transition is throughout analysed from a broader perspective that looks at the changing power relations within medieval society (which might loosely be described as feudal), and considers how these relations were affected by such commercial development.
