Book International Students in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book International Students in the Asia Pacific written by Peter Kell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the growing mobility of international students in the Asia Pacific. International students comprise over 2.7m students and it is estimated by the OECD that this will top 8 million in 2020. The great majority of them are students from the Asian countries who study in the Europe, North America and Asia. In addition countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong are becoming “education hubs” and are proposing to attract international students. Over 42% of international students come from Asia and this is predicted to continue with the strong presence of students from China, India, Korea and Japan continuing. A younger population, a growing middle class and shortages of quality education providers in the Asia Pacific region means that this mobility will be a feature of the future. This book explores questions around the mobility of international students in the context of the global economy and an increasingly competitive trans-national education market. It also explores questions about the experience of international students principally from the Asia Pacific region at a time of increased global insecurity and growing hostile reactions to foreigners in the post September 11th era. This book emerges from empirical work from several research projects funded by the World Bank and several community projects to support international students. The focus is also on the way in which student mobility promotes growing connection within the Asia Pacific, as well as other regions, and provides the foundations for new notions of global citizenships.

Book The Oxford Handbook of World Englishes

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of World Englishes written by Markku Filppula and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book focuses on some features shared by 'Old' and 'New' varieties of English. 'Old' refers here to varieties of English spoken in Britain only, i.e. English English (EngE) and/or British English (BrE). They represent the longest-established varieties of English and are part of the hardcore of the L1 or the 'Inner Circle' of Englishes. 'New' varieties, in this context, are ones that have arisen in colonial or postcolonial contexts (the 'Outer Circle') and also comprise historically L2 varieties, such as Irish English, that have evolved as a result of language shift. This chapter examines three syntactic features that show similar developments in both New and Old varieties: the use of some modal auxiliaries, especially WILL/SHALL, some 'extended' uses of the progressive, and finally, combinations of these two, especially WILL/SHALL + be V-ing. All three display convergent developments that suggest a leading role for the New Englishes rather than the Old varieties"--

Book Exploring English Phonetics

Download or read book Exploring English Phonetics written by Tatjana Paunović and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring English Phonetics is conceived as a meeting point of the diverse perspectives, approaches and interests of scholars working in the field of English Phonetics worldwide. The focus of the volume is on the topics in the domain of language varieties, mutual language influences, and also on issues pertaining to the research, study, and teaching of English to speakers from other language backgrounds. Authors raise a number of novel, motivating and noteworthy questions, relevant from the point of view of either phonetic research or phonetic training and EFL teaching. These questions cover a wide range of phonetic topics: the nature of vowels and consonants in several dominating varieties of English, the phenomena of connected speech and the nature of intonation, issues in the methodology of phonetic research, problems encountered by speakers of other languages striving to acquire English pronunciation, and attitudes to different native and non-native varieties of English. Despite such a broad variety of topics, the volume offers a unifying approach to the study of speech and puts forward intriguing results gained by original research. Whatever their focus and sample size, most chapters deal with the English spoken and learned by speakers of other languages, thus highlighting both the current status of English as the language of global communication, and the international orientation of this volume.
