Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Commons and Forests: The Story of the Battle During the Last Thirty Years for Public Rights Over the Commons and Forests of England and Wales We have been asked, as two of the oldest associates of Lord Eversley in the movement for preserving Open Spaces, to write a few words of introduction to the new edition of this work. Lord Eversley was mainly instrumental in founding the Commons Preservation Society, in 1865, and was appointed its Chairman at its first meeting. He has since occupied that position continuously, except when he has held office under the Government, and in the year 1905 he was also appointed President of the Society. The Committee over which he has presided has included, from time to time, very many men whose names are well known in public life, in literature, or in the professions; to their varied labours reference is made in the following narrative. The titles of Chairman and President have been no honorary titles with Lord Eversley. The number of Meetings of the Committee which he has not attended might probably be counted on the fingers; he has been foremost in shaping and giving effect to the policy of the Society; and whenever it has been necessary, he has spared neither time nor trouble in supporting its views. In Debates in the House, in Parliamentary Committees, at Public Meetings, he has taken a leading part; his pen has always been at the service of the Society; and in countless ways he has brought his influence to bear on its work. His extensive knowledge of the technicalities of the subject will be apparent from these pages; it has enabled him to appreciate the efforts of his professional colleagues and assistants in a way and to a degree as uncommon as they have been agreeable to them. The Society has for many years been anxious to mark in some way its appreciation of Lord Eversley's long services; and the usual complimentary tributes were proposed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have always attached meaning to the landscape that surrounds them. In Storied Ground Paul Readman uncovers why landscape matters so much to the English people, exploring its particular importance in shaping English national identity amid the transformations of modernity. The book takes us from the fells of the Lake District to the uplands of Northumberland; from the streetscapes of industrial Manchester to the heart of London. This panoramic journey reveals the significance, not only of the physical characteristics of landscapes, but also of the sense of the past, collective memories and cultural traditions that give these places their meaning. Between the late eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, Englishness extended far beyond the pastoral idyll of chocolate-box thatched cottages, waving fields of corn and quaint country churches. It was found in diverse locations - urban as well as rural, north as well as south - and it took strikingly diverse forms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that land should be—or even could be—treated like any other commodity has not always been a given. For much of British history, land was bought and sold in ways that emphasized its role in complex networks of social obligation and political power, and that resisted comparisons with more easily transacted and abstract markets. Fast-forward to today, when house-flipping is ubiquitous and references to the fluctuating property market fill the news. How did we get here? In Marketable Values, Desmond Fitz-Gibbon seeks to answer that question. He tells the story of how Britons imagined, organized, and debated the buying and selling of land from the mid-eighteenth to the early twentieth century. In a society organized around the prestige of property, the desire to commodify land required making it newly visible through such spectacles as public auctions, novel professions like auctioneering, and real estate journalism. As Fitz-Gibbon shows, these innovations sparked impassioned debates on where, when, and how to demarcate the limits of a market society. As a result of these collective efforts, the real estate business became legible to an increasingly attentive public and a lynchpin of modern economic life. Drawing on an eclectic range of sources—from personal archives and estate correspondence to building designs, auction handbills, and newspapers—Marketable Values explores the development of the British property market and the seminal role it played in shaping the relationship we have to property around the world today.
