This research monograph presents a description of English according to algorithms which can be programmed into a computer to analyse natural language texts. The algorithmic approach uses series of instructions, written in Natural Language and organised in flow charts, with the aim of analysing certain aspects of the grammar of a sentence. One problem with text processing is the difficulty in distinguishing word forms that belong to parts of speech taken out of context. In order to solve this problem, Hristo Georgiev starts with the assumption that every word is either a verb or a non-verb. From here he presents an algorithm which allows the computer to recognise parts of speech which to a human would be obvious though the meaning of the words. Emphasis for a computer is placed on verbs, nouns, participles and adjectives. English Algorithmic Grammar presents information for computers to recognise tenses, syntax, parsing, reference, and clauses. The final chapters of the book examine the further applications of an algorithmic approach to English grammar, and suggests ways in which the computer can be programmed to recognise meaning. This is an innovative, cutting-edge approach to computational linguistics that will be essential reading for academics researching computational linguistics, machine translation and natural language processing.

Book excerpt: The article describes the optimal graphic language of presenting and studying English grammar using information technology. Among the studies on the use of graphics in teaching a foreign language, there are mostly descriptions of static objects. The authors propose to use a universal graphic language for describing processes. The authors suggest theoretical foundations of visualization of the English grammar rules using time-sequential conversion scale in the sequence of tenses transformation. The research question is the method of archiving knowledge of English grammar to simplify and speed up the memorization and to increase the volume of information memorized. To achieve this goal, the authors used a graphic algorithmization of the English grammar and visualization of grammar rules, as well as the comparative monitoring of the knowledge gained. As part of research, a series of experiments on the visualization of the rules of sequence of tenses were conducted in student groups. The research showed that a simple language of symbols facilitates and accelerates the memorization of English grammar. Systematic tabulation of grammar rules, where each verb tense gets its finished graphic image, becomes easy to understand and quick to memorize. The application of the presented approach is the following: effective linguistic education, local and global automatic synthesis system and text editing.

Chan discusses the kinds of grammatical and phonological problems that Cantonese ESL learners often have in their acquisition of English. In terms of grammar, various structures are reviewed, including errors which are clearly due to L1 interference and also those which may not be directly L1-related. Learners’ common misconceptions about relevant concepts are also revealed. In terms of phonology, both speech perception and speech production problems at the segmental and suprasegmental levels are examined. For learner problems which may be the result of L1 interference, a contrastive approach is adopted in analysing the cause and nature of the errors. Chan also offers readers pedagogical insights to target common grammatical problems, including the use of an algorithmic approach, the use of a discovery-based consciousness-raising approach and the use of metalinguistic explanations. Despite the fact that grammatical inference addresses problems in a re- tively narrow area, it uses techniques from many domains, and is positioned at the intersection of a number of di?erent disciplines. Researchers in grammatical inference come from ?elds as diverse as machine learning, theoretical computer science, computational linguistics, pattern recognition, and arti?cial neural n- works.
