Download or read book The Literary Side of the Armada written by Cristina Vallaro and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-17 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Anglo-Spanish War in the 16th century reached its climax in August 1588, when King Philip’s Felicissima Armada challenged Queen Elizabeth’s fleet in the waters of the Channel. If the outcome of the war has been much commented on and debated throughout the centuries, the impact the war had on literature has been neglected for a long time. This book presents to scholars, students and readers how the Armada was dealt with in the literature of the countries involved in the conflict. It offers a view on the Armada from both Spanish and English voices: Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser and Drayton are flanked by Góngora, Cervantes and Lope de Vega.
Download or read book The English and French Navies 1500 1650 written by Benjamin W. D. Redding and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2022 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges the received wisdom about the relative weakness of French naval power when compared with that of England. This book traces the advances and deterioration of the early modern English and French sea forces and relates these changes to concurrent developments within the respective states. Based on extensive original research in correspondence and memoirs, official reports and accounts, receipts of the exchequer and inventories in both France, where the sources are disparate and dispersed, and England, the book explores the rise of both kingdoms' naval resources from the early sixteenth to the mid seventeenth centuries. As a comparative study, it shows that, in sharing the Channel and with both countries increasing their involvement in maritime affairs, English and French naval expansion was intertwined. Directly and indirectly, the two kingdoms influenced their neighbours' sea programmes. The book first examines the administrative transformations of both navies, then goes on to discuss fiscal and technological change, and finally assesses the material expansion of the respective fleets. In so doing it demonstrates the close relationship between naval power and state strength in early modern Europe. One important argument challenges the received wisdom about the relative weakness of French naval power when compared with that of England.

Download or read book Historicism Originalism and the Constitution written by Patrick J. Charles and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of history in law is a time honored tradition. Over the years the practice has assumed many forms, including historicism, intentionalism, interpretivist history, law office history, historical narrative, originalism, etc. This book picks up where past commentators have left off. The different historically based approaches to adjudicating constitutional questions are weighed and considered, particularly originalism, and asserts that history in law is legitimate only if it leads to accurate results. The book then purposes an approach to accomplish the objectives of historical accuracy and objectivity, and therefore legitimacy.
