Book England Under the Tudors

Download or read book England Under the Tudors written by G.R. Elton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Anyone who writes about the Tudor century puts his head into a number of untamed lions’ mouths.’ G.R. Elton, Preface Geoffrey Elton (1921–1994) was one of the great historians of the Tudor period. England Under the Tudors is his major work and an outstanding history of a crucial and turbulent period in British and European history. Revised several times since its first publication in 1955, England Under the Tudors charts a historical period that witnessed monumental changes in religion, monarchy, and government – and one that continued to shape British history long after. Spanning the commencement of Henry VII's reign to the death of Elizabeth I, Elton’s magisterial account is populated by many colourful and influential characters, from Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cranmer, and Thomas Cromwell to Henry VIII and Mary Queen of Scots. Elton also examines aspects of the Tudor period that had been previously overlooked, such as empire and commonwealth, agriculture and industry, seapower, and the role of the arts and literature. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new foreword by Diarmaid MacCulloch.

Download or read book Spanish Literature England of the Tudors Classic Reprint written by John Garrett Underhill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Literature England of the Tudors The adoption of this purpose has made it necessary that the contents of the following pages should often be political and biographi cal in their character. Few of the facts which have been gathered in these departments are new, although many of them are unfamiliar. The Calendars of state papers published under the supervision of the Master of the Rolls, with their complete indices, and the Dictionary of national biography, with its copious citations of authorities, have made it easy to refer at once to the original sources of political and historical scholarship. I have, therefore, gen erally avoided loading the pages with foot notes, which would in this case be mere pedantry. A bibliography of the principal books essential to a knowledge of the subject has been included at the close, the titles of which sufliciently indicate the scope and appli cation of the individual works. Download or read book Church and State Under the Tudors Classic Reprint written by Gilbert William Child and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and State Under the Tudors A new book on a subject on which so much has been already written may seem to call for an apology. I think, however, that there are several reasons why such a book may be acceptable. A very large amount of new material for the history of the sixteenth century has been brought to light in recent years by the publication of State papers, ambas sadors' letters, and other original documents which were formerly but little known. Much of this, it is true, has been worked up into many volumes by learned and able writers, to whom I am greatly indebted; but of these, some are works read almost exclusively by students ex professo, and many others, from the extent of ground which they have to cover, are too voluminous for ordinary readers: some, too, are written with so strong a party bias as to mislead rather than guide those who consult them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England Under the Tudors, King Henry VII (1485 1509): With an Introduction and Some Comments by James Gairdner I must in my history of necessity tread upon much ground where I am not, nor can be, at home; and although I have been fortunate enough to obtain much advice from friends, I feel I must still beg for' indulgence. I can only hope that, with those advantages which naturally belong to the historian who treats his subject as a connected whole, I may be able to contribute something to further the general appreciation of such subjects as trade, industry, agriculture, and the administration of justice, which have hitherto always been separately dealt with. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For the first time in decades comes a fresh look at the fabled Tudor dynasty, comprising some of the most enigmatic figures ever to rule a country. “A thoroughly readable and often compelling narrative . . . Five centuries have not diminished the appetite for all things Tudor.”—Associated Press In 1485, young Henry Tudor, whose claim to the throne was so weak as to be almost laughable, crossed the English Channel from France at the head of a ragtag little army and took the crown from the family that had ruled England for almost four hundred years. Half a century later his son, Henry VIII, desperate to rid himself of his first wife in order to marry a second, launched a reign of terror aimed at taking powers no previous monarch had even dreamed of possessing. In the process he plunged his kingdom into generations of division and disorder, creating a legacy of blood and betrayal that would blight the lives of his children and the destiny of his country. The boy king Edward VI, a fervent believer in reforming the English church, died before bringing to fruition his dream of a second English Reformation. Mary I, the disgraced daughter of Catherine of Aragon, tried and failed to reestablish the Catholic Church and produce an heir. And finally came Elizabeth I, who devoted her life to creating an image of herself as Gloriana the Virgin Queen but, behind that mask, sacrificed all chance of personal happiness in order to survive. The Tudors weaves together all the sinners and saints, the tragedies and triumphs, the high dreams and dark crimes, that reveal the Tudor era to be, in its enthralling, notorious truth, as momentous and as fascinating as the fictions audiences have come to love. Praise for The Tudors “A rich and vibrant tapestry.”—The Star-Ledger “A thoroughly readable and often compelling narrative . . . Five centuries have not diminished the appetite for all things Tudor.”—Associated Press “Energetic and comprehensive . . . [a] sweeping history of the gloriously infamous Tudor era . . . Unlike the somewhat ponderous British biographies of the Henrys, Elizabeths, and Boleyns that seem to pop up perennially, The Tudors displays flashy, fresh irreverence [and cuts] to the quick of the action.”—Kirkus Reviews “[A] cheeky, nuanced, and authoritative perspective . . . brims with enriching background discussions.”—Publishers Weekly “[A] lively new history.”—Bloomberg

D. 1485 to 1559 It is not necessary to follow this investigation further, but the mention of' it was essential as affording the first step in the evidence as to the authenticity and authorship of the Chronicle. There 18 no doubt then as to its being one of those nume1ous City Chronicles which were at this period so often kept by intelligent Londoners for their own satisfaction and the perusal of their friends and descendants, without any ulterior intention 'of publication. In this instance, the ms., which has been preserved amongst the family archives of the noble house of Percy, is not the original but a transcript of' the time of J ames I. Bearing no trace of the author's name, or indication of the time at which he lived. We are couse quently compelled to fall back on internal evidence, and fortunately several incidental allusions made by the author to his own family connections furnish us with the desired information. The most direct and valuable of these is a passage in which he claims relation ship With the great statesman of Henry the Eighth's reign, Lord Chancellor Wriothesley, afterwards, on l6th F ebruary, 1547 created Earl of Southampton: This yeare in Aprill, my cosin Mr. Thomas Wriosley was made the Kinges Secretarie, and Mr. Sadler, of the Privie Chamber, joyned with him, and were booth made knightes also. Book Tudors The History of England from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I

Download or read book Tudors The History of England from Henry VIII to Elizabeth I written by Peter Ackroyd and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Ackroyd, one of Britain's most acclaimed writers, brings the age of the Tudors to vivid life in this monumental book in his The History of England series, charting the course of English history from Henry VIII's cataclysmic break with Rome to the epic rule of Elizabeth I. Rich in detail and atmosphere, Peter Ackroyd's Tudors is the story of Henry VIII's relentless pursuit of both the perfect wife and the perfect heir; of how the brief reign of the teenage king, Edward VI, gave way to the violent reimposition of Catholicism and the stench of bonfires under "Bloody Mary." It tells, too, of the long reign of Elizabeth I, which, though marked by civil strife, plots against the queen and even an invasion force, finally brought stability. Above all, however, it is the story of the English Reformation and the making of the Anglican Church. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, England was still largely feudal and looked to Rome for direction; at its end, it was a country where good governance was the duty of the state, not the church, and where men and women began to look to themselves for answers rather than to those who ruled them.
