Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and the English, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is only to express my thanks to certain kind correspondents for the assistance they have afforded me, that I shall delay the Reader from the work now before him. To one gentleman ofthe highest scientific attainments and reputation I am indebted for many suggestions, of which I have availed myself in my brief view of the State of Science - to another gentleman, qualified, perhaps before all men living, to judge profoundly of the philosophy of Bentham, I am also indebted for considerable aid in the sketch of that remarkable writer's moral and legislative codes which will be found in the Appendix to the second volume; and to the taste and critical know ledge of a third gentleman I owe many obligations in the chapter devoted to the survey of the State of the Arts amongst us at this time. To the last gentleman my acknowledgments are perhaps the greater, because he has suffered me, in his general approbation of my theories, to apply a part of his. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuation of the History of England, Vol. 2 He had, in his answer to their former address, assured them of his constant regard to the rights and prosperity of the nation: he had explained the exhausted state of the Dutch; cx-patiated upon the zeal of that republic for the interests of Britain, as well as the maintenance of the protestant religion; and expressed his hope that the English parliament would not only repay the sums they had expended in his expedition, but likewise fur ther support them to the utmost of their ability against the common enemies of their liberties and religion. He had observed that a considerable army and fleet would be necessary for the reduction of Ireland and the pro tection of Britain, and he desired they would settle the revenue in such a manner that it might be collected without difficulty and dispute. The sum total of the money expended by the states - general in William's expedition amounted to seven millions of guilders, and the commons granted six hundred thousand pounds for the discharge of this debt, incurred for the preservation of their rights and religion. They voted funds for rais ing and maintaining an army of two-and-twenty thou sand men, as well as for equipping a numerous fleet but they provided for no more than half a year's sub sistence of the tr00ps, heping the reduction of Ireland might be finished in that term; and this instance of frugality the king considered as a mark of their difii dence of his administration. The whigs were resolved to supply him gradually, that he might be the more dependent upon their zeal and attachment; but he was not at all pleased with their precaution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child's History of England, Vol. 2 But the Englishman did it for all that, and did it - not SO madly but so wisely, that he decoyed the great army into the narrow ill-paved lanes and bye-ways of Lincoln, where its horse-soldiers could not ride in any strong body; and there he made such havoc with them, that the whole force surrendered themselves prisoners, except the Count who said that he would never yield to any English traitor alive, and accordingly got killed. The end of this victory, which the English called, for a joke, the Fair of Lincoln, was the usual one in those times - the common men were slain without any mercy. Book The Conquest of England Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Conquest of England Vol 2 of 2 Classic Reprint written by John Richard Green and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conquest of England, Vol. 2 of 2 The upgrowth of the kingly power had been brought about, as we have seen, by a number of varied influences. It had drawn new strength from the dying out of the other royal stocks leaving the house of Cerdic alone, and from the high character of the kings of Elfred's line. A long series of victories, the constant sight and recognition of the king as head of the national host, and the religious character with which the leadership in war against a heathen foe invested him, had added to the royal dignity; and new claims to authority had sprung from the gradual up-building of England, and the extent of dominion brought under the king's rule, from the balance of Danish and anti-danish parties in the realm, and from the king's position as common political centre of the English provinces. Along with the advance thus brought about in the authority of the Crown, there went on a change in the old Teutonic conception of kingship, and an imitation of Imperial claims aided by intercourse with the Imperial court. The solemn coronation of the king, the oath of fidelity, the identification of loyalty with personal troth to the personal king, the doctrine of treason, the haughty claims to a far-reaching supremacy, the vaunting titles assumed in charters, all pomt to a new conception of royalty. But the royal claims lay still far ahead of the real strength of the Crown. There was a want of administrative machinery in actual con nexion with the government, responsible to it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England, Vol. 2: Its People, Polity, and Pursuits English, and which have a charm of novelty that English do not possess; in Brittany; in the Bavarian Tyrol at the German spas; under the shadow of the Alps; by the shores, no longer solitary, Of the Swiss lakes. Or the anglo-saxon holiday-maker goes farther afield, and, performing the grand tour on a scale worthy of the larger notions of these later days, puts a girdle round half the world, and embraces a hemisphere 'in his arduous pilgrimage of pleasure. He studies life under a republic in the United States, or he watches the working of the machinery of empire in India, or he endeavours to mark, by per sonal investigation, the differences between constitutional government as it exists in England, and constitutional government as it is transplanted to our Australasian dependencies. If he is unable to accomplish all this in a single expedition, he Still frequently contrives to leave the well-worn Alpine tracks far behind, and sets his face in the direction of the Scythian Steppes or the snowy crown of Ararat. Not a year passes in which adventurous Britons do not achieve feats hitherto un attempted, and the in uence of these exploits is never lost. The names of such men as Macgregor, Burnaby, Bryce, Grove, Freshfield, become the watchword of the rising generation Of Englishmen, and their exploits the standard of true British adventure.
