Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and Germany Behind any human institution there stand a few men - perhaps only one man - who direct its movement, protect its interests, or serve as its mouthpiece. This applies to nations. If we Wish to know for What a nation stands and what are its ideals and by what means it seeks to realise them, we shall do well to know something of the men who lead its people or express their feelings. It is of vital importance that we should understand the attitude of every one of the nations - both friends and enemies - involved in this war. For in this way only can we know what is necessary to be done to achieve victory. And the remarkable man who has written this book knows those who lead the warring nations in this titanic conflict very much better than ordinary men know their own townsmen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England Germany These letters, which appeared originally in The Observer, are reproduced, with the kind permission of Lord Northclifie, at the request of a number of people known and unknown to me, who thought them worthy of preserva tion. A few corrections and expurgations have been made, and they have been slightly added to. Otherwise they stand as I wrote them, partly while travelling abroad. If they suffer from tautology, I would submit the opinion of De Quincey, that in a newspaper tautology is a virtue; as for the iterative method, that, in dealing with a problem of this nature, was part of my deliberate intention. Since they were written a calm has fallen upon Europe; the relations between England, Germany, and France have sensibly improved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England, Germany and Europe Never has there been so sudden a change in the complexion Of a nation as that which took place among us during the first days of August. One week we saw nothing but confusion, irresolution, pro crastination; party spirit enraged to an unknown degree the very foundations of the State undermined, the House of Commons, which is the mainspring in our institutions lamed, civil war imminent. For the first time within the memory of man the authority Of Parliament was Openly challenged by men in arms. The discipline of the Army had become a question of party politics and men threatened to throw into the cauldron the Crown itself. Look where one would there was no escape, no solution of the unprecedented entanglement. A few days passed and the voice of faction was dead the two Houses of Parliament'at harmony within and united with each other showed themselves to be representatives of a united nation, and for the first time since the death of Pitt we heard from the Treasury Bench in clarion tones the authentic voice of England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England or Germany Partisans, especially English-speaking partisans, are pretty sure to condemn this book of mine as if it were written in a spirit of bitter prejudice. There is probably an inclination in me to take the weaker side, the side of those who have the odds against them, for I have often noticed this inclination in other Celts; but this tendency, if it exists, is not the bias usual among American writers. In self-justifi cation I say that those who would stand upright must lean against the prevalent wind in proportion to its strength. Of course, one may lean too far and lose balance; if I have done that, it is involuntary and I shall have to pay for the folly. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How England Looks to Germany The human infant, through a sea of perplexing doubts, was safely carried to the impregnable rock of eternal truth by such giants as Kant, Fichte and Hegel. The ideas created by Goethe, Schiller and Beethoven, those masters of words and harmonies, are Spirits storming to be born into the flesh and blood of the visible world of to-day. Stein, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau - those reformers that wedded the Prussian state to the German ideal - thereby preserved both. William I that unique charac ter who found genius and tolerated it, who sustained the Bismarcks and the Von Moltkes, while they raised the torn and tattered Fatherland to the rank of a European power, the strength of which now decides world questions. Book England and Germany in the War

Download or read book England and Germany in the War written by Robert J. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England and Germany in the War: Letters to the Department of State This book comprises a series of letters addressed to the Secretary of State by Mr. Robert J. Thompson, recently American consul at Aix-la-Chapelle, Germany, who resigned from his post, as the letters explain, purposely to be free from official restrictions in reporting facts of the European war situation as he has found them. Mr. Thompson is a citizen of Chicago. He has spent close to ten years in the consular service in Germany and England, and has also spent much time in France, the beautiful Lafayette monument in Paris being the result of his suggestion and effort. He entered the foreign service upon the recommendation of friends among the business men of the country for the purpose of demonstrating what a successful business man might accomplish in the direction of extending American foreign trade. The character of his reports and observations reveal an independent point of view somewhat out of, if not above the ordinary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Germany IT is right for me to say that this volume of the series has been carefully revised by Mr. A. W. Ward, than Whom England can supply no one better fitted to deal with matters of German History of all dates. Mr. Ward must be understood as guaranteeing only the general accuracy of the narrative. In other respects the volume falls under the same rules as its fellows. As I have already said in the Preface to the History of England, this volume, like the others, is strictly the work of its own author, subject only to the requirement of a general agreement in form and treatment with the other volumes of the series. Book The Literary Relations of England and Germany

Download or read book The Literary Relations of England and Germany written by Gilbert Waterhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Relations of England and Germany: In the Seventeenth Century The present volume is the result of researches prosecuted during my tenure of the Tiarks German Scholarship. My choice of the subject was inspired by Professor Herford's Studies in the Literary Relations of England and Germany in the Sixteenth Century, but when I submitted it to the electors I confess I had little idea of the extent of my task. My main intention was to supplement Professor Herford's chapters where necessary, but I also expected to find sufficient material in connection with the influence of the English drama in Germany and of German hymns in England to occupy my attention for the full period of my tenure. It seemed highly improbable that much evidence of intercourse in any other branch of literature would be forthcoming. My researches had not been long in progress before I discovered that the work of Erich Schmidt, Brie, Ruhl and Bergmeier had placed the old themes beyond need of further supplement. On the other hand, every day brought such additions to my dramatic bibliography that I was soon obliged to omit from my plan all discussion of the dramatic relations of England and Germany, with the exception of those dramas which deal with English or German history. The subject will easily fill another volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Still, since history presents many instances of Governments acting in Opposition to the true interests of their subjects, and others, hardly less numerous, of individuals or classes working on the passions and fears of the bulk of the people to bring about a war by which they hope to profit, it is incumbent on Great Britain not to trust too confidently to the enlightened self interest of other nations, and, therefore. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from England, Literary and Social, From a German Point of View The following Essays were written at various times, after long and often repeated residences in England. They not only reproduce impressions, but also recapitulate the studies to which such residences gave rise. Published originally in periodicals for the most part, they have been enlarged, revised, and are here for the first time presented in a complete form. Unity of place, object, and tone, if I may be allowed the expression, lends them a certain esoteric connection, justifying their appearance in their present form; although they cannot claim to be considered in a systematic sense as a perfect whole.
