Book excerpt: Since 1987 more than 300 buildings have been listed for their special architectural and historic interest. From humble prefabs to the colossal Park Hill, Sheffield, the range of listed buildings is staggering. This book lists all of them. Sir Albert Richardson's Bracken House, built for the Financial Times in 1955-59, was the first post-war building to be officially listed, when it was threatened with demolition. Listing led to its remodelling by Michael Hopkins in 1989-91, a demonstration of how the conservation process can inspire radical architectural interventions. Subsequent listings have been prompted by requests from the public when a building is threatened, or from detailed studies by building type. Buildings range from traditional works by Raymond Erith and Donald McMorran and many of the 'pop icons' of the 1960s such as Centre Point, to internationally outstanding modern works like Stirling and Gowans' Leicester Engineering Building and Foster Associates' offices for Willis Faber Dumas in Ipswich.

Book An American Uprising in Second World War England

Download or read book An American Uprising in Second World War England written by Kate Werran and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2020-07-19 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shocking story of a WWII shootout between black and white GIs in a quiet Cornish town that put the British-US “special relationship” on trial. On September 26, 1943, racial tensions between American soldiers stationed in Cornwall erupted in gunfire. Labelled a ‘wild west’ mutiny by the tabloids, it became front page news in Great Britain and the USA. For Americans, it bolstered a fast-accelerating civil rights movement, while in the UK, it exposed unsettling truths about Anglo-American relations. With new archival research, journalist Kate Werran pieces together the shocking drama that authorities tried to hush up. Her narrative examines everything from the controversy of American segregation on British soil to the shocking event itself and the resulting court martial. Extracted from wartime cabinet documents, secret government surveys, opinion polls, diaries, letters and newspapers as well as testimony from those who remember it, this story offers a rare window into a little-known dark side of the ‘American Invasion.’

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical investigation into Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s decision-making process during every stage of World War II. When Winston Churchill accepted the position of Prime Minister in May 1940, he insisted in also becoming Minister of Defence. This, though, meant that he alone would be responsible for the success or failure of Britain’s war effort. It also meant that he would be faced with many monumental challenges and utterly crucial decisions upon which the fate of Britain and the free world rested. With the limited resources available to the UK, Churchill had to pinpoint where his country’s priorities lay. He had to respond to the collapse of France, decide if Britain should adopt a defensive or offensive strategy, choose if Egypt and the war in North Africa should take precedence over Singapore and the UK’s empire in the East, determine how much support to give the Soviet Union, and how much power to give the United States in controlling the direction of the war. In this insightful investigation into Churchill’s conduct during the Second World War, Allen Packwood, BA, MPhil (Cantab), FRHistS, the Director of the Churchill Archives Centre, enables the reader to share the agonies and uncertainties faced by Churchill at each crucial stage of the war. How Churchill responded to each challenge is analyzed in great detail and the conclusions Packwood draws are as uncompromising as those made by Britain’s wartime leader as he negotiated his country through its darkest days.

Book Victory in the Kitchen

Download or read book Victory in the Kitchen written by and published by Imperial War Museums. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When World War II began, Britain had an immediate crisis on its hands: its ability to import food drastically curtailed, the island would very quickly have to find ways both to produce more and use less. For that latter task, the kitchen was the headquarters, and this little book presents the battle plan. Drawn from scattered sources in the archives of the Imperial War Museums and presented here in a charming gift book, the recipes of Victory is in the Kitchen helped guide British cooks as they coped with unprecedented scarcity and restrictions. Rustling up creative dishes out of meager rations, the recipes gathered here include scrap bread pudding, potato pastry, and sheep's heart pie, as well as adapted English standbys like Lancashire hot pot, Queen's Pudding, and crumpets. Interwoven with the recipes are colorful reproductions of inspirational wartime posters, while an introduction sets the historical context. The resulting package is the perfect gift for any cook, a reminder of a time when ration books and recipes had to be made to work together.

Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of WWII. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, the Second World War. In this searing narrative that takes us from Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 to V-J day on August 14, 1945 and the war's aftermath, Beevor describes the conflict and its global reach -- one that included every major power. The result is a dramatic and breathtaking single-volume history that provides a remarkably intimate account of the war that, more than any other, still commands attention and an audience. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's grand and provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on this complex, tragic, and endlessly fascinating period in world history, and confirms once more that he is a military historian of the first rank.

Download or read book Farthing written by Jo Walton and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2006-08-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One summer weekend in 1949—but not our 1949—the well-connected "Farthing set", a group of upper-crust English families, enjoy a country retreat. Lucy is a minor daughter in one of those families; her parents were both leading figures in the group that overthrew Churchill and negotiated peace with Herr Hitler eight years before. Despite her parents' evident disapproval, Lucy is married—happily—to a London Jew. It was therefore quite a surprise to Lucy when she and her husband David found themselves invited to the retreat. It's even more startling when, on the retreat's first night, a major politician of the Farthing set is found gruesomely murdered, with abundant signs that the killing was ritualistic. It quickly becomes clear to Lucy that she and David were brought to the retreat in order to pin the murder on him. Major political machinations are at stake, including an initiative in Parliament, supported by the Farthing set, to limit the right to vote to university graduates. But whoever's behind the murder, and the frame-up, didn't reckon on the principal investigator from Scotland Yard being a man with very private reasons for sympathizing with outcasts...and looking beyond the obvious. As the trap slowly shuts on Lucy and David, they begin to see a way out—a way fraught with peril in a darkening world.
