Book Seven Wonders of Engineering

Download or read book Seven Wonders of Engineering written by Ron Miller and published by Twenty-First Century Books. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every age, science and technology have played an important role in advancing human civilization. From architecture to engineering, communication to transportation, humans have invented and developed extraordinary wonders. Engineers take the discoveries of scientists and mathematicians to make practical things, from roads and bridges to weapons and vehicles. Electronic engineers design and build everything from television sets to computers. Chemical engineers research new uses for plastics and other materials. Other engineers design new energy sources and nonpolluting factories. In this book, we’ll explore seven wonders of modern engineering that allow people to travel beneath the ocean, bring power to entire cities, and land on the moon. We’ll also see engineering wonders that cut though a continent and design engines too small to see. Along the way, we’ll see advancements in materials, technology, and construction techniques, and we’ll learn the stories of how and why these engineering feats became important to the world.

Book Engineering Wonders of the World Vol 3

Download or read book Engineering Wonders of the World Vol 3 written by Archibald Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Wonders of the World, Vol. 3: With 424 Illustrations, Maps, and Diagrams Though veritable engineering wonders, the airship and the flying machine are still in their infancy, so young that we cannot yet see clearly what form they are likely to take as they develop. Will the final victory rest with the dirigible balloon or with the heavier than-air self-lifting and self-supporting machine? Or will there be uses found for both types of air craft? It is impossible to say. The attitude which scouts the idea of aviation becoming more than a sport for the wealthy few seems hardly worthy of serious consideration. The advantages Of being able to travel through the air, upborne by a medium which requires not a farthing's-worth of expenditure in repairs, and which is practically illimitable, are too Obvious to need setting forth. The motor car has come into general use largely because Of its capacity to save time in cross-country journeys, through districts not served by the railway. But even the car has to keep to the beamn track; to cross a river at one or other of a few points - Often many miles apart - at which bridges have been built to traverse mountain ranges where the engineers have made the roads. Long detours are, in many circum stances, unavoidable. The aeroplane and dirigible know no such limitations. Given the capacity to keep moving in the direction desired, there will be nothing to hinder them getting from any one place to any other. Download or read book Engineering Wonders of the World Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Archibald Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering Wonders of the World, Vol. 2 The business districts of New York cover the southern end of Manhattan Island, where land fetches enormous prices. A corner plot at the junction of Broadway and Wall Street sold for 120 a square foot - the highest price ever paid for a building Site. The triangular site on which rises the famous flat-iron Build ing cost half a million pounds sterling. N o wonder, then, that in New York engineers and architects have turned their attention very seriously to the problem Of Securing more ample 0 cc accommodation by increasing the height of buildings. With brick and stone the limit had been reached at from twelve to fourteen stories, as the necessary thickness of the walls at the foundations diminished the floor space to a serious extent. Architects therefore took advantage of the fact that mild steel is at least two hundred times stronger than brickwork in compression, and infinitely stronger in tension. Book Remaking the World

Download or read book Remaking the World written by Henry Petroski and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1998-12-29 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science/Engineering "Petroski has an inquisitive mind, and he is a fine writer. . . . [He] takes us on a lively tour of engineers, their creations and their necessary turns of mind." --Los Angeles Times From the Ferris wheel to the integrated circuit, feats of engineering have changed our environment in countless ways, big and small. In Remaking the World: Adventures in Engineering, Duke University's Henry Petroski focuses on the big: Malaysia's 1,482-foot Petronas Towers as well as the Panama Canal, a cut through the continental divide that required the excavation of 311 million cubic yards of earth. Remaking the World tells the stories behind the man-made wonders of the world, from squabbles over the naming of the Hoover Dam to the effects the Titanic disaster had on the engineering community of 1912. Here, too, are the stories of the personalities behind the wonders, from the jaunty Isambard Kingdom Brunel, designer of nineteenth-century transatlantic steamships, to Charles Steinmetz, oddball genius of the General Electric Company, whose office of preference was a battered twelve-foot canoe. Spirited and absorbing, Remaking the World is a celebration of the creative instinct and of the men and women whose inspirations have immeasurably improved our world. "Petroski [is] America's poet laureate of technology. . . . Remaking the World is another fine book." --Houston Chronicle "Remaking the World really is an adventure in engineering." --San Diego Union-Tribune

This truly global approach reveals how humans have tackled similar challenges - such as keeping the enemy out or venerating their gods - in vastly different parts of the world. As writer, historian, and broadcaster Dan Cruickshank writes in his foreword, "reading this book is like taking a journey through the world not only of the present but also of the past, because the roots of many wonders lie in antiquity." By combining breathtaking photography with 3D cutaway artworks, floorplans, and other illustrations, the hidden details and engineering innovations that make each building remarkable are revealed. Featuring the most visited monuments in the world - such as the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, and Machu Picchu - as well as some hidden gems, Manmade Wonders of the World can help you to map out the trip of a lifetime or simply be enjoyed as a celebration of the world that humans have built over thousands of years.
