Book Advanced Thermodynamics for Engineers

Download or read book Advanced Thermodynamics for Engineers written by D. Winterbone and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the basic theories of thermodynamics are adequately covered by a number of existing texts, there is little literature that addresses more advanced topics. In this comprehensive work the author redresses this balance, drawing on his twenty-five years of experience of teaching thermodynamics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to produce a definitive text to cover thoroughly, advanced syllabuses. The book introduces the basic concepts which apply over the whole range of new technologies, considering: a new approach to cycles, enabling their irreversibility to be taken into account; a detailed study of combustion to show how the chemical energy in a fuel is converted into thermal energy and emissions; an analysis of fuel cells to give an understanding of the direct conversion of chemical energy to electrical power; a detailed study of property relationships to enable more sophisticated analyses to be made of both high and low temperature plant and irreversible thermodynamics, whose principles might hold a key to new ways of efficiently covering energy to power (e.g. solar energy, fuel cells). Worked examples are included in most of the chapters, followed by exercises with solutions. By developing thermodynamics from an explicitly equilibrium perspective, showing how all systems attempt to reach a state of equilibrium, and the effects of these systems when they cannot, the result is an unparalleled insight into the more advanced considerations when converting any form of energy into power, that will prove invaluable to students and professional engineers of all disciplines.

Book Introduction to Thermal Systems Engineering

Download or read book Introduction to Thermal Systems Engineering written by Michael J. Moran and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2002-09-17 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey of thermal systems engineering combines coverage of thermodynamics, fluid flow, and heat transfer in one volume. Developed by leading educators in the field, this book sets the standard for those interested in the thermal-fluids market. Drawing on the best of what works from market leading texts in thermodynamics (Moran), fluids (Munson) and heat transfer (Incropera), this book introduces thermal engineering using a systems focus, introduces structured problem-solving techniques, and provides applications of interest to all engineers.

Book excerpt: New edition of a text co-published with Longman, updated to introduce both major and minor revisions, among them the change to the sign convention for work transfer which is now widely used by physicists and chemists and by an increasing number of engineers. The methodology remains based on Keenan's Thermodynamics (1941), the authors remaining convinced that this well-established route still provides the best introduction to the subject. • Author : Mahmoud Massoud

Download or read book Engineering Thermofluids written by Mahmoud Massoud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-09-16 with total page 1132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermofluids, while a relatively modern term, is applied to the well-established field of thermal sciences, which is comprised of various intertwined disciplines. Thus mass, momentum, and heat transfer constitute the fundamentals of th- mofluids. This book discusses thermofluids in the context of thermodynamics, single- and two-phase flow, as well as heat transfer associated with single- and two-phase flows. Traditionally, the field of thermal sciences is taught in univer- ties by requiring students to study engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, in that order. In graduate school, these topics are discussed at more advanced levels. In recent years, however, there have been attempts to in- grate these topics through a unified approach. This approach makes sense as thermal design of widely varied systems ranging from hair dryers to semicond- tor chips to jet engines to nuclear power plants is based on the conservation eq- tions of mass, momentum, angular momentum, energy, and the second law of thermodynamics. While integrating these topics has recently gained popularity, it is hardly a new approach. For example, Bird, Stewart, and Lightfoot in Transport Phenomena, Rohsenow and Choi in Heat, Mass, and Momentum Transfer, El- Wakil, in Nuclear Heat Transport, and Todreas and Kazimi in Nuclear Systems have pursued a similar approach. These books, however, have been designed for advanced graduate level courses. More recently, undergraduate books using an - tegral approach are appearing.
