Such records justify expenditures needed to get good engineering advice. A new terminal has recently been placed in operation by the American Express Company in New York City for the transfer of shipments from the city wagons to trains, and vice versa, in which the features found most successful in several other stations have been combined and mechanical means introduced to a large extent to aid in the sorting and rapid dispatch of packages. In this terminal the bulk of the New York business is to be handled, a small amount in certain Eastern districts continuing to pass through the former station at the Grand Central Terminal of the New York Central Lines. The building is located on the block between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, Thirty-second and Thirty-third Streets, which is just west of the new Pennsylvania Railroad Station. The west entrance on Eleventh Ave The Package-Handling System at the New American Express Terminal, New York Classifying and Loading Shipments in Eight Daily Trains with the Aid of Mechanical Conveyors and Sorting Table and Using Electric Platform Trucks handled on low four-wheel trucks of about 75 cu. ft. capacity, pushed by hand and steered by having swivelled wheels or casters at one end. They are of the Reynolds type, made by the Lansing Company, of Lansing, Mich. The lighter, short-haul work with these trucks is supplemented by ordinary hand-trucks and small three-wheel trucks having basket bodies. Total mortality 240, including eight deaths by accidental causes. Deaths by dlC3SC 232; white males 46, females 57; colored males 54, females 75. Annual rate for the whole population, 16.36; for the whites 13.77, for the culured 19.31. Bronchitis caused two deaths, diarrhmal diseases nine, malarial fever 18, typhoid fever five, scarlet fever one, puerperal fever one, croup four. diphtheria one, consumption 35, and pneumonia 12. The cause of death in 38 cases is repnrted as unknown. CONCORD, N. H.--The report for the year 1882 gives the tota deaths as 216; population 14,000, rate 15.44. Croup and diphtheria caused seven deaths, erysipelas one, typhoid fever eight, cerebrospinal meningitis one, whooping cough three, diarrhmal diseases eight, consumption 38, bronchitis three, congestion of lungs three, pneumonia i4, and violence four. Forty-two of the deaths occurred in children under five years of age, and 56 in persons over 7o years. The number of births in 1882 was 272, not including 18 still-births; males 13o, females 142. Ric-moNn, VA.--Dr. J. G. Cabell transmits a summary of the deaths which occurred during the year 1882. For comparison the figures of 1881 are given in brackets: Estimated population 68,000 (66,000).
