Book Engineering Flight Test of the Ah 1g Helicopter Equipped with the Xm 28 Chin Turret with One 7 62mm Automatic Gun m 134 and One 40mm Grenade Launcher xm 129 hybrid Phase B

Download or read book Engineering Flight Test of the Ah 1g Helicopter Equipped with the Xm 28 Chin Turret with One 7 62mm Automatic Gun m 134 and One 40mm Grenade Launcher xm 129 hybrid Phase B written by Peter V. Passinisi and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 5 of the AH-1G helicopter Phase B test was conducted at Yuma Proving Ground, Yuma, Arizona, from 6 through 9 February 1968 by the US Army Aviation Test Activity, Edwards Air Force Base, California. The test consisted of firing the XM-28 chin turret, with one 7.62 millimeter automatic gun (M-134) and one 40 millimeter grenade launcher (XM-129) to determine the weapons system's effect on the stability and control characteristics of the helicopter. No safety of flight restrictions resulted from firing this system within the flight envelope. Correction of four deficiencies is mandatory to provide acceptable mission effectiveness and safety. These deficiencies are the inadequate forward visibility from the pilot's cockpit due to the N-9A gunsight installation, the lack of a fire warning system, the lack of a standby generator for IFR flight, and link jam malfunctions of the minigun during symmetrical pull-out maneuvers. Fifteen shortcomings, for which correction is desirable, limit mission effectiveness. The reliability of the weapons system was questionable and service type testing should be conducted prior to system acceptance. Correction of the deficiencies is mandatory and should be tested prior to deployment. Shortcomings, for which correction is desirable, should be corrected on a high priority basis. (Author).

This book was released on 1968 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firing tests were conducted to determine the effects on the stability and control characteristics of the AH-1G helicopter caused by firing the twin XM-134 minigun 7.62 machine guns in the XM-28 chin turret. Firing the two XM-134 miniguns in the XM-28 turret does not cause any objectionable aircraft reactions which would restrict the flight envelope. The deficiencies and shortcomings detected during this test are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 2 of the AH-1G helicopter Phase B test was conducted at Bell Helicopter Company, Fort Worth Texas, from 8 September to 26 September 1967 by the US Army Aviation Systems Test Activity, Edwards AFB, California. Part 2 comprised the Phase B testing of the basic configuration (XM-157 rocket launcher outboard on each wing). Earlier tests (Phase B, Part 1) were of the Scout (XM-157 outboard, XM-18 inboard each wing) and Hog (two XM-159 rocket launchers on each wing) configurations. The prototype aircraft for this test was similar to the one previously tested. This test emphasized stability and control testing in the basic configuration.

Book Engineering Flight Test of the Ah 1g Helicopter Equipped with the Xm 20 Armament Subsystem automatic 20mm Cannon

Download or read book Engineering Flight Test of the Ah 1g Helicopter Equipped with the Xm 20 Armament Subsystem automatic 20mm Cannon written by Stephen G. Dorris and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The engineering flight test of the AH-1G helicopter equipped with the XM-20 armament subsystem (automatic 20MM cannon) was conducted at Fort Hood, Texas from 31 January 1968 through 2 February 1968 by the US Army Aviation Test Activity, Edwards Air Force Base, California. Firing and nonfiring flight tests were conducted to determine the effects on the stability and control characteristics of the AH-1G helicopter caused by installation of the XM-20 armament subsystem. These tests were primarily qualitative in nature with limited qualitative data. The only stability and control characteristic which was affected either in the firing or nonfiring mode was the static longitudinal cyclic position gradients which were low at high speeds. The deficiencies detected during this test were the interference of the XM-20 gearbox with the XM-159 rocket pod and unreliability of the standard airspeed system due to the location of the static port in proximity to the XM-20 blast pressures. One firing rate of 600-800 spm is considered optimum. The XM-20 appears to offer greater stand-off capability, greater accuracy and more killing power than 2.75 inch rockets. It appears to be a reliable subsystem. The XM-20 configuration should be finalized, installed on a production AH-1G helicopter and certified for airworthiness throughout the AH-1G flight envelope as soon as possible to allow early introduction to Republic of Vietnam. Download or read book Engineering Flight Test of the Ah 1g Helicopter hueycobra Phase B written by John R. Melton and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part 1 of the AH-1G helicopter Phase B test was conducted at Ft Hood, Texas by the US Army Aviation Test Activity, Edwards AFB, California. The helicopter flying qualities were evaluated throughout the aircraft speed range for the Scout and Hog configurations at a mid-center-of-gravity location. Flying qualities were also evaluated during weapons firing and external stores jettison. The primary deficiencies detected during this test were stability and Control augmentation system (SCAS)-pylon coupling, inadequate in-ground-effect (IGE) directional control power, undue pilot attention required to avoid exceeding the torque limits of the helicopter transmission in dives and left rolls with fixed collective, and an inadequate, illogical fire control system. Other shortcomings were detected, such as airspeed system errors, degradation of flying qualities with SCAS off, static lateral cyclic control force imbalance, and marginal cockpit ventilation. Helicopter reactions to weapons firing and external stores jettison were satisfactory, and the contractor approved flight envelope for firing and jettison was acceptable.

Book Engineering Flight Test AH 1G Helicopter Hueycobra Phase D Part 1 Handling Qualities

Download or read book Engineering Flight Test AH 1G Helicopter Hueycobra Phase D Part 1 Handling Qualities written by Rodger L. Finnestead and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AH-1G helicopter manufactured by Bell Helicopter Company (BHC) was designed specifically to meet the US Army requirements for an armed helicopter. Tandem seating is provided for a two-man crew. The main rotor system is a two-bladed, semi-rigid, 'door hinge' type with the stabilizer bar removed. The engine is derated to 1100 shp due to the maximum torque limit of the main transmission. Distinctive features of the AH-1G are: the narrow fuselage (36 inches), the stub midwing with four external store stations, the integral chin turret. The flight control system is of the mechanical, hydraulically boosted, irreversible type with conventional helicopter controls in the aft cockpit (pilot station). The controls in the forward cockpit (copilot/gunner station) consist of conventional antitorque pedals and sidearm collective and cyclic controls. An electrically operated force trim system is connected to the cyclic and directional controls to induce artificial feel and to provide positive control centering.
