Book excerpt: Engineering and Commercial Functions in Business focuses on the relationship of engineering and commercial functions in business, as well as business functions, types of business, and activities of engineers in organizations. The monograph first elaborates on organizations, structure of organizations, and business functions. Discussions focus on communication interfaces, functional area activities, authority, organization structure, structuring and organization, and engineering organizations. The text also ponders on financial factors, cost elements, and budgetary control. Topics cover budgets, cost audits, preparing budgets, flexible budgets, elements of manufacturing costs, direct material and overhead costs, operational costs, and financial factors. The manuscript takes a look at forecasting and inventory control, including uses of forecasting, opinion gathering, correlation with related variables, economic order quantities, and finished good stocks. The text is a valuable source of information for researchers interested in engineering and commercial functions in business.
Download or read book Systems Engineering for Commercial Aircraft written by Scott Jackson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key principle of systems engineering is that an aircraft should be considered as a whole and not as a collection of parts. Another principle is that the requirements for the aircraft and its subsystems emanate from a logical set of organized functions and from economic or customer-oriented requirements as well as the regulatory requirements for certification. The resulting process promises to synthesize and validate the design of aircraft which are higher in quality, better meet customer requirements and are most economical to operate. This book is more of a how to and a why to rather than a what to guide. It stresses systems engineering is an integrated technical-managerial process that can be adapted without sacrificing quality in which risk handling and management is a major part. It explains that the systems view applies to both the aircraft and the entire air transport system. The book emphasizes that system engineering is not an added layer of processes on top of the existing design processes; it is the glue that holds all the other processes together. The readership includes the aircraft industry, suppliers and regulatory communities, especially technical, program and procurement managers; systems, design and specialty engineers (human factors, reliability, safety, etc.); students of aeronautical and systems engineering and technical management; and government agencies such as FAA and JAA.

Download or read book Chevrolet Volt written by Lindsay Brooke and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2011-04-04 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compendium presents the most complete design and engineering story available anywhere about this groundbreaking new vehicle. It also introduces you to the engineering team and how they made the world’s first production extended-range electric vehicle a reality. Combining articles from SAE International’s Vehicle Electrification and Automotive Engineering International magazines, new SAE technical papers, and all-new content, this full-color book is the only one of its kind that lifts the veil on how the GM team and key supplier partners met the difficult engineering challenges faced in developing the Volt. Topics include the Volt’s systems, components, and model-based design; a behind-the-wheel look at a Volt prototype; and how the Volt’s engineering team used OnStar to collect test drive data from preproduction Volt vehicles. There is also an interview with GM’s Micky Bly in which the executive explains how the Volt program enabled GM to take new approaches to vehicle electrical architectures.

Download or read book National Association of Broadcasters Engineering Handbook written by Garrison C. Cavell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 1948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NAB Engineering Handbook is the definitive resource for broadcast engineers. It provides in-depth information about each aspect of the broadcast chain from audio and video contribution through an entire broadcast facility all the way to the antenna. New topics include Ultra High Definition Television, Internet Radio Interfacing and Streaming, ATSC 3.0, Digital Audio Compression Techniques, Digital Television Audio Loudness Management, and Video Format and Standards Conversion. Important updates have been made to incumbent topics such as AM, Shortwave, FM and Television Transmitting Systems, Studio Lighting, Cameras, and Principles of Acoustics. The big-picture, comprehensive nature of the NAB Engineering Handbook will appeal to all broadcast engineers—everyone from broadcast chief engineers, who need expanded knowledge of all the specialized areas they encounter in the field, to technologists in specialized fields like IT and RF who are interested in learning about unfamiliar topics. Chapters are written to be accessible and easy to understand by all levels of engineers and technicians. A wide range of related topics that engineers and technical managers need to understand are covered, including broadcast documentation, FCC practices, technical standards, security, safety, disaster planning, facility planning, project management, and engineering management.
Download or read book The System Concept and Its Application to Engineering written by Erik W. Aslaksen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-13 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems engineering is a mandatory approach in some industries, and is gaining wider acceptance for complex projects in general. However, under the imperative of delivering these projects on time and within budget, the focus has been mainly on the management aspects, with less attention to improving the core engineering activity – design. This book addresses the application of the system concept to design in several ways: by developing a deeper understanding of the system concept, by defining design and its characteristics within the process of engineering, and by applying the system concept to the early stage of design, where it has the greatest impact. A central theme of the book is that the purpose of engineering is to be useful in meeting the needs of society, and that therefore the ultimate measure of the benefit of applying the system concept should be the extent to which it advances the achievement of that purpose. Consequently, any consistent, top-down development of the functionality required of a solution to the problem of meeting a defined need must proceed from such a measure, and it is agued that a generalised form of Return on Investment is an appropriate measure. A theoretical framework for the development of functionality based on this measure and utilising the system concept is presented, together with some examples and practical guidelines.

Download or read book Commercial Multimedia Technologies for Twenty First Century Army Battlefields written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-11-27 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book responds to an request by the U.S. Army to study the applicability of commercial multimedia technologies to command, control, communications and intelligence needs on future battlefields. After reviewing Army's needs and discussing relevant commercial technologies within the context of a generic architecture, the book recommends approaches for meeting the Army's needs. Battlefield potential is illustrated, andâ€"drawing on lessons learned from the private sectorâ€"a technology management strategy consisting of specific recommendations to the Army is provided. The key to future benefits is for the Army to accommodate the rapid changes taking place in the commercial world of multimedia technologies.
