And ironically, I struggle with words. Despite publishing books, I often find more comfort in equations than in sentences. Perhaps it's because I come from a background in engineering and the sciences. This latest book, however, is about my father. Korean fathers, unlike their Western counterparts, are shaped by Confucian traditions. They are stoic, burdened with the weight of financial responsibility, and rarely express emotion. An emotionally detached son, like me, never truly understood his father. And now, this son is attempting to write about him. But much like the first paragraph of this text, this one also feels awkward. How can someone who neither understands the emotions of others nor expresses his own, write about family ties? It's a contradiction I live with every day. My father, every day as he left for work, wore a strange coat. And now, as his son—a man defined by an XY chromosome and an inability to grasp emotions—I find myself standing before his death, attempting to decipher our emotions through numbers and formulas. As you know, South Korea faces a grave demographic challenge, with low birth rates and an aging population. The youth are avoiding marriage, even shying away from relationships altogether. Why is that? Could it be, in some way, due to the "mysterious coat"? When I was young, Korean fathers seemed like towering mountains—imposing, distant, unapproachable. But when I faced my father's cold, lifeless body, why did those once-broad shoulders seem so small and frail? In this wheel of emotional contradictions, can we ever truly understand one another? This is the story of a son and his father, intertwined in the equations of pain and the waves of emotion. Have you solved the mystery yet?

Most of the bad things in Dad's life were done to himself, but he always saw himself as a victim of evil people out to destroy him. Despite the unflattering and embarrassing realities of his bipolar disorder, this book will fully examine his life and explain how our family dealt with his mental illness and difficult personality. It was sad to watch Dad's life slowly spiral downward into a personal hell as he became his own worst enemy, especially with his personal relationships and finances. For those who knew him best, he was ultimately loved and appreciated as a person who wanted to make a positive impact on the world. Maybe this book could give his life more meaning and serve as a cautionary tale for those with similar loved ones who refuse to seek help.

Though the profession is held in low esteem by the general public, Strong entered the field with the right motives: to help victims who have been injured by defective products or through the negligence of others. As a twelve-year-old in rural southwest Missouri during the Great Depression, Strong bought a cow, then purchased others as he could afford them, and eventually financed his education with the milk he sold. After graduating law school and serving in the Army’s Counter Intelligence Corps, he rejected offers to practice in New York and San Francisco and returned to his hometown of Springfield. When witnesses of a terrible collision claimed both roadways had green lights simultaneously, Strong purchased the traffic light controller. After three months of continuous testing at a university, the controller failed, showing four green lights, and Strong learned that fail-safe devices were available but had not been implemented. These fail-safe devices are now standard on traffic lights throughout the country. In his last venture, Strong represented the state of Missouri in its case against the tobacco industry, culminating in a settlement totaling billions of dollars. He reflects on the changes—not always for the better—in his oft-maligned profession since he entered the field in the 1950s. Thomas Strong’s story of tenacity, quick wits, and humor demonstrates what made him such a creative and effective attorney. Lawyers and law students can learn much from this giant of the bar, and all readers will be entertained and heartened by his victories for the everyman.
